The Macintosh Color Classic II is the last compact Macintosh with a built-in 9-inch-viewable colour screen: the Macintosh Color Classic's case, Trinitron display and analogue board with a faster logic board, a 68030 at 33 MHz in place of 16 MHz. It was also sold as the Macintosh Performa 275.[1][2] It was not sold in the United States. Low End Mac says it went on sale first in Canada in 1993 and then in Asia and Europe; EveryMac lists Japan, Canada and Europe and dates it from October 1993 to May 1994.[2][3]

Memory
[edit | edit source]Apple's Color Classic II/Performa 275 Service Source gives 4 MB on board, expandable to 10 MB with 100 ns SIMMs in one slot with two 30-pin connectors (J10), both filled or both empty.[1][4] Those pages repeat the Color Classic manual word for word, apart from the model name, and the exploded view gives the same logic board part number, 661-1830, as the Color Classic manual.[5][6]
Low End Mac and EveryMac give one 72-pin SIMM socket, 36 MB maximum and a 32-bit data path, and Low End Mac says the Color Classic II shares its logic board with the Performa/LC 550.[2][3] Apple's own Macintosh LC 520/550/575 Service Source gives the LC 550 4 MB on board, expandable to 36 MB through a 72-pin SIMM connector.[7]
Look at the board before buying memory. One long 72-pin socket means the LC 550 arrangement and 36 MB; a pair of short 30-pin sockets means the Color Classic arrangement, filled as a pair, and 10 MB.
Service documentation
[edit | edit source]
- Macintosh Color Classic II/ Performa 275 Service Source: Apple's Service Source (137 pages, embedded above). Apple's Adjustments chapter covers geometry, video, convergence, geometric distortion, yoke and light meter setup, with no power-supply adjustment; the battery rule is replace below 3.0 V.[8]
- Macintosh LC 520/550/575 Service Source covers the LC 550, whose logic board Low End Mac identifies with the Color Classic II's.[2]
All Apple service manuals on the wiki are listed at Apple Service Source.

The PRAM cell is lithium; Low End Mac and EveryMac give it as 3.6 V. Apple's rule is replace below 3.0 V.[2][3][8] Neutralise lithium-cell leakage with bicarbonate of soda, not vinegar. Recap-a-Mac reports four leaky capacitors around the sound chip at the top left of the logic board and says any unrecapped Color Classic II "is living on borrowed time".[9]
Upgrades
[edit | edit source]- 68882 FPU in socket U9, bevelled edge towards connector J13.[4]
- One 256 KB VRAM SIMM in J9.[4]
- LC-compatible PDS (J8). Apple lists the Apple IIe emulation card and the LC Ethernet card as options.[1]
- No official upgrade path; Low End Mac reports LC 575 logic boards being fitted.[2]
