PredecessorPower Macintosh 8500

The Power Macintosh 8600 is a tower Macintosh with a PowerPC 604e processor card, three PCI slots and video input and output. Apple introduced the 8600/200 on 17 February 1997 with the 7300 and 9600, and the 8600/250 and 8600/300 on 5 August 1997.[1][2][3] It replaced the Power Macintosh 8500 and uses the same tower case as the 9600, with fewer DIMM and PCI slots.[4] Wikipedia records that supply problems kept the 8600/200 scarce until June 1997 and that the 8600 was discontinued in February 1998.[5]

Models

[edit | edit source]
Power Macintosh 8600 models (Service Source)
Model Processor L2 cache Hard drive CD-ROM
8600/200 604e, 200 MHz 256 KB cache DIMM 2 GB AppleCD 1800i (12×)
8600/250 604e (Mach 5), 250 MHz 1 MB on the processor card 4 GB AppleCD 24×
8600/300 604e (Mach 5), 300 MHz 1 MB on the processor card 4 GB AppleCD 24×

All models came with 32 MB of RAM, 2 MB of VRAM and a Zip drive (SS pp. 4–5, 10–11, 50–59).[4] The 8600/200's 2 GB drive is described by Apple as AV-capable, able to record video at 30 frames per second without dropped frames.[6]

Differences from the 9600

[edit | edit source]
  • Eight DIMM slots (512 MB) and three PCI slots, against the 9600's twelve and six (SS pp. 18, 50, 54).[4]
  • Built-in video: a DB-15 port on the logic board with 2 MB of VRAM on DIMMs, expandable to 4 MB, and an AV module with composite and S-video input and output and RCA audio (SS pp. 22, 36, 51, 54).[4] The AV module, 922-1740, also fits the 8500 but not the 9600 (SS p. 235).[4]
  • The 8600/200 logic board has a cache DIMM slot; the 8600/250 and 8600/300 board has none, because their cache is on the processor card (SS pp. 40–41).[4] Owners identify the boards as 820-0858-B and 820-0931-A.[7] Apple warns that the inline-cache processor card does not work in an older board.[8]
  • A plastic air deflector (922-3070), stuck inside the chassis beneath the logic board, is fitted to the 8600 only; some early machines shipped without it, and Apple's instructions are to fit one when the fan is replaced (SS pp. 109–113).[4]

One owner lists 820-0858-B as the 8600/200 board, another found the same number on a board in a 7300, and a third reports that an 8600 logic board fits the 7300 case and power supply.[9][10]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

The 8600 shares the 9600's case, power supply and Service Source, and Apple's charts for both are on Power Macintosh 9600 Troubleshooting. Owners' reports of 9600 power supply failures apply to the same supply, Apple service part 661-1242.[4] The clock battery is a 3.6 V lithium cell.[1] See Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Maintenance and repair

[edit | edit source]

No capacitor list has been published for the 8600 logic boards. Power Macintosh 9600 Capacitor Replacement Guide lists the parts on Apple's schematic for the first 9600 board, which is a different board.
