The Macintosh Quadra 610 DOS Compatible is a Macintosh Quadra 610 with Apple's DOS Compatible card, an Intel 486SX PC on a card, installed in its expansion slot. Apple introduced it on February 28, 1994 and discontinued it on June 13, 1994.[1] Byte described the card, code-named Houdini, as a spring 1994 market test: it had modest performance and no NetWare or Sound Blaster support, but Apple's inventory of 25,000 boards sold out within several months. Its successor was the DOS Compatibility Card for the Power Macintosh.[2]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]Macintosh side
[edit | edit source]The Macintosh side is a Quadra 610: 25 MHz processor, 1 MB ROM, 4 MB of RAM on the logic board and two 72-pin SIMM slots for up to 68 MB (80 ns), 512 KB of VRAM expandable to 1 MB, built-in Ethernet on an AAUI-15 port.[1][3] Apple's two documents disagree on the processor: the Service Source lists the DOS Compatible with a 68LC040 (no FPU), while Apple's technical specifications give a 68040 with the FPU marked optional.[3][1]
DOS Compatible card
[edit | edit source]From Apple's Service Source:[3]
- Intel 486SX at 25 MHz, with 32-bit addressing and data paths.
- One 72-pin SIMM slot for the PC side's own memory, 80 ns or faster. The Service Source gives up to 64 MB; Apple's technical specifications and EveryMac give up to 32 MB.[1][4]
- 512K of 80 ns video DRAM soldered on the card, supporting standard VGA, many SVGA monitors and Macintosh monitors.
- A 32-bit DMA channel giving peripherals access to local memory and to memory shared through the Macintosh operating system.
Apple's technical specifications also list a PC game port.[1]
The card fills the machine's single expansion slot, so no PDS or NuBus card can be fitted alongside it.[1]
Identification
[edit | edit source]| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Order number | M2322LL/A (160 MB hard disk)[4] |
| Model number | M2113[4] |

Power and battery
[edit | edit source]The Service Source gives 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz, 112 W not including the monitor, for the family; Apple's technical specifications list 210 W maximum and 1.7 A.[3][1] The PRAM battery is a 3.6 V lithium cell; Apple's check is to replace it below 3.2 V on the 10 V DC range.[1][3]
Service
[edit | edit source]The Quadra 610 DOS Compatible is serviced from the Macintosh Quadra 610/ Centris 610/WS 60 Service Source; its board, case and supply are those of the Quadra 610 and Centris 610. For maintenance, capacitor and troubleshooting information see:
