Apple Network Server 500 and 700 Documentation
Six Apple documents for the Apple Network Server (500 and 700) are hosted as PDFs: the Service Source, the Network Server chapter of the 1997 Service Guide, the AIX and RAID card manuals, and two data sheets. Three of the six files come from the software pack Apple shipped with the servers, which a collector uploaded to the Internet Archive; the Service Guide chapter and the data sheets come from Internet Archive scans.[1]
Service Source
[edit | edit source]The Service Source for the Network Server 500 and 700 Series is Apple's 308-page module-level service manual for the Network Server 500/132, 700/150 and 700/200. It was produced from FrameMaker and has a text layer. Each chapter is numbered from page 1; the page numbers below are PDF pages.[2]

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- The LCD progress and problem messages, and the dash count that identifies the DIMM slot under test (pp. 50-63).
- Rated output currents of the 500 and 700 supplies and the PCI power allowances (pp. 80-84).
- The keylock matrix (p. 68), the logic board reset (pp. 39-40) and the warning that the fan-to-SCSI-backplane cable fits the similar rear drives' power connector, after which the server will not power on (p. 143).
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics, component values or board-level parts list; the exploded views give module part numbers only, and there is no list of footnoted parts such as the battery.
- No battery voltage threshold: the charts say only "Check battery". The 3.2 V figure is in the Service Guide below.
- The electrical table (p. 81) has an unlabelled "+12 V, 2.0 A" row, and its footnote reads "+3.3 and +5.5" for +3.3 V and +5 V.
- The Overview lists a two-processor "Network Server 700/200SMP" (p. 5); Cameron Kaiser writes that the dual-processor card was never sold.[3]
- The manual refers to "Bulletins/Safety", to the Service Source companion CD and to Apple's Setting Up the Network Server guide, none of which is in this file.

Service Guide volume V, Network Server chapter
[edit | edit source]The Service Guide: Macintosh Computers, Volume V (June 1997) is Apple's printed compilation of service information for machines introduced between February 1996 and March 1997, which lists its Network Server 500 and 700 chapter as "updated". The hosted file holds three extracts from a 300 dpi scan of a spiral-bound copy, 47 pages in all: the introduction (printed p. xiii), Figure 9, "Startup System Power Problems" (p. 19), and chapter 11, "Apple Network Server 500 and 700" (pp. 213-257).[4] Printed page n of chapter 11 is PDF page n − 210.
Contents of chapter 11

AIX manual
[edit | edit source]Using AIX, AppleTalk Services, and Mac OS Utilities on the Apple Network Server is Apple's 190-page guide to installing and administering AIX 4.1 on the Network Server. The PDF was made on 2 February 1996.[5] Chapters (printed pages): Introduction to the System (1), Installing AIX on Your Network Server (11), System Startup, Logging In, Shutting Down, and Rebooting (27), Using AIXwindows and the Common Desktop Environment (33), Using InfoExplorer (61), Using System Administration Tools (91), Setting Up AppleTalk and AppleTalk Services (105), Managing File Storage With the Disk Management Utility (127), Remote Access With CommandShell (149), Troubleshooting (157).
Chapter 10 gives the maintenance-mode boot, the three-digit AIX display values shown on the LCD, and fixes for stop codes 522, 551, 552, 553, c31 and c32. It does not cover the hardware; for that it refers to Setting Up Your Network Server.
RAID card manual
[edit | edit source]Using a Network Server PCI RAID Disk Array Card (part number 030-8687-A, 1996) is Apple's 162-page guide to the optional RAID card. Its specification appendix gives a Mylex DAC960PL controller with an Intel i960 processor at 25 MHz, a 72-pin cache SIMM of 2 to 32 MB, three NCR 53C720 SCSI processors and RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 0+1 and JBOD. Up to four cards can be fitted, each with an array of up to 14 disks; the card has a battery backup for its cache and drives the drive-bay lights through a 26-pin AEMI cable.[6]
Data sheets
[edit | edit source]- File:Apple Network Server Data Sheet (L01695C).pdf: Apple's eight-page data sheet (L01695C, August 1996) with specifications for all three models, a cutaway of the case, configurations and accessory order numbers. Its pages are out of order in the file.[7]
