Apple's PowerBook 500 Series Service Source is the service manual for the PowerBook 520, 520c, 540 and 540c. The hosted copy has 180 pages; the PDF was created in January 1996 and last modified in July 2002. Page numbers below are PDF pages.[1] MacDat hosts an earlier 174-page edition (modified January 1998) without the repair strategy pages and the startup flowchart.[2]

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Battery voltages: about 10.8 V charged, 7.8 V discharged, and as low as 5.0 V after long storage out of the machine (pp. 173-174).
- Adapter connector: pin 1 VBATT and pin 2 VMAIN at 16.4-16.6 V, pins 3 and 4 ground (p. 177).
- Power manager reset: three to five minutes without power, then Control, Command, Option and power for 5-10 seconds (p. 178).
- The backup battery is recharged by the computer over 48 hours, and is checked by whether the date and time survive ten minutes without power (pp. 175-176).
- All screws are Torx, T-8 or T-6 (pp. 9-10).
- Part numbers, including motherboards 661-0054 (Rev A) and 661-0108 (Rev B), fuse 922-1116, backup battery 922-0786 and inverter board 922-0774 (p. 180).
- Apple's normal behaviours for the 520 and 520c display, and the floppy drive serial-number ranges that needed a new drive (pp. 39-40, 43).
What this manual does not contain
