Macintosh Performa 5200CD Capacitor Replacement Guide

Capacitor work on the Macintosh Performa 5200CD and its relatives, the 5210CD, 5215CD, 5220CD and Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC, covers three boards: the power supply, the analogue/video board and the logic board. Apple documents the 5200 and 5300 in one manual, which excludes the later 5260 and 5280.[1] Apple serviced these machines by module exchange, and its manual lists modules and part numbers only, with no component values or capacitor designators (p. 8).[1] Read the values off your own boards before ordering parts.
The CRT and the analogue board carry lethal voltages, and the tube holds its charge after unplugging. The power supply's primary side runs at mains potential and its reservoir capacitor stays charged after unplugging. Discharge the CRT (CRT Discharge Procedure) and the supply's reservoir before touching either board.
The boards
[edit | edit source]| Assembly | Apple part numbers |
|---|---|
| Power supply | 661-0331 (Rev. A, thermistor at CN13); 661-0930 (Rev. A, no thermistor); 661-1117 (Rev. B, thermistor at CN9) |
| Analogue/video board assembly | 661-0928 (Rev. A); 661-1356 |
| CRT assembly | 661-0952 (US); 661-0954 (southern hemisphere) |
| Logic board | 661-0931 (75 MHz, Rev. A); 661-1008 (75 MHz, Rev. B); 661-1041 (100 MHz) |
The power supply and the analogue/video board are separate assemblies. Apple says the three supplies are not interchangeable and must be exchanged like for like (p. 140).[1] Apple's diagram labels the Rev. B supply, 661-1117, for the 5300, 5400 and 5500 as well (p. 153).[1]
Identify the version before ordering parts. On the original version the speakers are part of the front bezel; on Rev. B they are fixed to the sides of the metal chassis. The rear label reads 620-0635 or 620-0835 on the original version and 620-0637 or 620-0837 on Rev. B (pp. 4–5).[1]
Removing the boards
[edit | edit source]Apple's order for the power supply is: I/O door, rear housing, front bezel, logic board, rear EMI shield, then the power supply shield and the supply (pp. 139–150). For the analogue board, the CRT must also be discharged and the anode cap, video board and analogue shield removed first (p. 161).[1]
- On the Rev. A supply, the 6-pin power-supply-to-analogue-board cable (CN3) and the 10-pin cable (CN4) are keyed and very tight; Apple suggests loosening the sockets with a jeweller's screwdriver (p. 148).[1]
- On the Rev. B supply, the pull-up tab on CN5 is fragile (p. 153).[1]
- Do not disconnect the cables between the video board and the analogue board (p. 162).[1]
Replacement procedure
[edit | edit source]- Discharge the CRT and remove the anode cap (CRT Discharge Procedure).
- Remove the board as above. Photograph every board and cable before disconnecting anything.
- Inspect each electrolytic for a domed or split top, electrolyte on the board, or corroded pads. Clean suspect areas with isopropyl alcohol and look at the pads under magnification.
- Record the capacitance, voltage rating, temperature rating and size of every capacitor you intend to replace before removing any.
- Fit replacements of the same capacitance and at least the same voltage rating, 105 °C, low-ESR types in the power supply. The primary reservoir sits on rectified mains, about 340 V DC on 240 V mains, so never fit a lower voltage rating there than the part you removed.
- Observe polarity: on aluminium electrolytics the stripe marks the negative lead.
- Inspect the solder joints on the flyback transformer and other heavy components while the board is out, and reflow any that are cracked.
- After replacing the CRT or the deflection board, perform Apple's high-voltage adjustment: 29.5 V DC ± 0.1 V at D713 or D703, set with VR501 or VR702 (pp. 313–317). The procedure is on the troubleshooting page.[1]
Apple's electrical figures for the machine are 100–240 VAC, 47–63 Hz, 125 W, 2.5 A maximum and 40 A peak inrush (p. 47).[1]
Logic board
[edit | edit source]Apple's Service Source, Recap-a-Mac and MacDat publish no capacitor list or annotated photograph for this logic board, so record the type, value and position of each capacitor on your own board before removing any. The board slides out after the I/O door is removed; refit it at an upward angle to clear the EMI clips (pp. 10, 222).[1] The PRAM battery is a 4.5 V alkaline pack on a plug; see General Maintenance. For the general signs of failed capacitors, see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
