The Power Macintosh 5200 (sold as the Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC) is the education-market version of the Macintosh Performa 5200CD: an all-in-one Macintosh with a 75 MHz PowerPC 603 and a built-in 15-inch display. Apple dates it 3 April 1995 and gives its discontinuation as 13 April 1996.[1] Wikipedia records that the 5200 LC and 5300 LC were sold mainly to North American education buyers and as the Performa 5200 and 5300 to consumers.[2] Apple's developer note calls the Power Macintosh 6200 functionally identical, in a low-profile case with an external monitor.[3]

The hardware, revisions, Repair Extension Program checks, symptom charts and repair guides for the family are on Macintosh Performa 5200CD and Macintosh Performa 5200.

Repair Extension Program

[edit | edit source]

Apple's Repair Extension Program for system freezes and sudden colour-hue changes names the Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC and 5300/100 LC alongside the Performa 5200, 5215 and 5300. The program's checks (clock chip at U10, cache/ROM DIMM, internal RGB cable, Ethernet card fence) and the Open Transport 1.1.1 note are set out on Macintosh Performa 5200#Repair Extension Program.[4]

Clock battery and safety

[edit | edit source]

The clock battery is a 4.5 V alkaline pack; leakage is alkaline and is neutralised with a weak acid such as white vinegar. See Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.[1] Apple's battery test, logic board reset and the high-voltage adjustment for the analogue board are on Macintosh Performa 5200CD General Maintenance.

The analogue board and CRT carry lethal voltages. Follow the CRT Discharge Procedure before working inside the case.
