Sharp MZ-1F11 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Sharp published an owner's instruction manual and a service manual supplement for the MZ-1F11 MZ Disk Drive, the external Quick Disk drive that it sold for the MZ-700, MZ-800, MZ-2000 and MZ-2200. Its drive is the same Mitsumi drive that is built into the Sharp MZ-1500, so these are the nearest Sharp documents to a service manual for the MZ-1500's drive.[1] Both are hosted as English scans from SharpMZ.net.

Instruction manual

[edit | edit source]

File:Sharp MZ-1F11 Instruction Manual.pdf is Sharp's 15-page owner's instruction manual for the MZ-1F11. Its contents, with printed page numbers:[2]

Section Page
Cautions before the contents
Parts of the disk drive 1
Connecting the MZ-1F11 to a computer (MZ-700 series with the MZ-1E14, MZ-800 with the MZ-1E19) 2
MZ disk: the 2.8-inch disk, inserting it, write-protect tabs, data read and write, disk protection 3 to 5
How to clean the disk head 6
Removing the bottom plate 7
Pin-out of connectors 8
Specifications 9
Circuit diagram 10

The specifications give 64 KB per side on one spiral track, a disk life of 2,000 passes and a supply of +5 V ±5% at 300 mA average (1.5 W, rising to 5 W during a motor lock failure).[2]

Service manual supplement

[edit | edit source]

File:Sharp MZ-1F11 Service Manual Supplement.pdf is Sharp's 8-page supplement to the MZ-1F11 service manual, code 00ZMZ1F11R//E. It applies from serial number SU000012, when the drive's SIO board gained a Quick Disk controller LSI and the head padding became an assembled pad unit.[3]

Section Page
Troubleshooting: deciding whether the MZ-1E14 interface or the MZ-1F11 is at fault; flow charts for a motor that does not run, write failure (write-protect error, not-ready error, data not readable after writing) and read failure; an SIO bus check program 1 to 3
Pad unit replacement procedure (pad life 18,000 passes) 4
QDC pin configuration 4
Circuit diagram 5
Parts position of the SIO board 5
Parts list for the SIO board 6

What these documents do not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • The original MZ-1F11 service manual is not here. The supplement refers back to it for everything it does not change, including the off-track adjustment named in its read-failure chart.[3]
  • There is no parts list for the drive mechanism or its control board, and no belt specification.
  • Neither document mentions the MZ-1500 or the MZ-2000; the instruction manual describes connection to the MZ-700 series and the MZ-800 only.[2]
