The Sharp X68030 is the 68030-based successor to the Sharp X68000 series, sold by Sharp in Japan from March 1993 as the CZ-500C and, with an 80 MB hard disk, the CZ-510C.[1] It replaces the X68000's 68000 with a Motorola MC68EC030 running at 25 MHz and has 4 MB of RAM as standard.[1][3] The case keeps the twin-tower layout of the Sharp X68000 XVI, and the power supply is the same type as the XVI's.[2][6] A smaller X68030 Compact with 3.5-inch drives followed in May 1993.[1]

Apart from the processor, most of the design comes from the X68000. The graphics hardware, sound chips and most of the I/O are carried over, while the memory controller, system controller and clock generator were redesigned for the 32-bit processor.[3] Many programs written for the 68000 models needed patches to run on it.[2]

History

[edit | edit source]

Sharp released the X68030 in March 1993, after the X68000 XVI and the X68000 Compact.[1] The CZ-500C cost ¥398,000 and the CZ-510C, with its internal 80 MB hard disk, ¥488,000. Both came in titanium black with a red X68030 badge.[2] The X68030 Compact, CZ-300C and CZ-310C, followed in May 1993.[1] The X68030 models were the last in the X68000 line.[2]

Sharp later issued the service manuals for the X68030 (CZ-500C-B/CZ-510C-B) and the X68030 Compact as free electronic books on its COCORO BOOKS store in March 2016.[7][6] The circuit diagrams reproduced in Kuwano Masahiko's 1994 book X68030 Inside/Out are hosted here as the Sharp X68030 Schematic.[5]

Processor and memory

[edit | edit source]

The MC68EC030 is an MC68030 without the memory management unit.[3] It sits in a socket so that it can be replaced with a faster part or a full MC68030, and the start-up screen reports an MMU when one is fitted.[2] The MC68882 floating-point coprocessor is an option. Its socket, IC43, takes the PLCC version, and the coprocessor talks to the CPU directly instead of being driven through software as on the X68000.[3][8]

The 4 MB on the main board is made up of eight HM514402A chips, IC27 to IC34.[8] These are Hitachi static column DRAMs, which allow accesses within a page without wait states.[2] Memory is expanded inside the case: the CZ-5BE4 board adds 4 MB and the CZ-5ME4 module adds another 4 MB on top of it, for 12 MB in all.[3]

The BIOS and character fonts are in two 8 Mbit mask ROMs, iX2138CE and iX2139CE, each wired as a 256K × 16 device.[3] The main board schematic also shows positions IC3 and IC4 for 27C4096 EPROMs, selected in place of the mask ROMs by a link marked ROM SW.[8]

Holding XF3 or XF4 while the machine starts adds wait states so that it runs at the speed of the 10 MHz X68000 or the 16 MHz XVI. The CPU clock itself stays at 25 MHz, and the register that reports the CPU type and clock always reads $DC.[9][2]

Custom chips and boards

Sharp's drawing of the component side of the X68030 main board K7929DE, with the MC68EC030 and MC68882 sockets left of centre and the eight HM514402A DRAMs at the top right

Three custom chips are new. YUKI (iX2136CE) is the memory controller, SAKI (iX2137CE) the system controller, and OSCIAN2 (iX1856CE) the clock generator, which adds a 640 × 480 mode. The CPU, ROM, main memory and coprocessor share a 32-bit bus, and SAKI converts for the 16-bit I/O devices. The DMA and CRT circuits run at 16 MHz and the expansion slots at 10 MHz.[3] The video chips CYNTHIA, VICON, VIPS and CATHY are carried over from the X68000.[8][2]

The schematic set names eight circuit boards and the power supply.[8][4][5][10]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The power supply runs from 100 V mains through fuse F1 (125 V, 4 A) and a switching converter built round MOSFET Q1. It feeds the control board through connector A (+5 V, +12 V, −12 V, the +5 V standby rail VCC2 and a power-control line), the main board through connector B (+5 V), the floppy drives through P/Q and the hard disk through D. A second, small converter round transformer T2 makes VCC2, the supply for the power switch circuit and the backup cell's charging circuit. The supply drawing also shows an AC 100 V outlet rated at 300 W.[5] The POWER switch itself is on the control board and runs from VCC2.[4]

Japanese owners call this supply the SH4. The X68000 EXPERT, EXPERT II, SUPER and XVI use the same type.[6] Mashiron's ATX cable and AC adapter conversion kits, sold by BEEP, list the CZ-500C and CZ-510C among the models they fit.[11]

Storage and SCSI

[edit | edit source]

The two 5.25-inch drives belong to the same drive family as those of the ACE to XVI.[12] The X68030 has a SCSI interface on the control board, an MB89352 controller.[4] It is electrically SCSI-1, but the X68030 can boot from removable SCSI devices such as magneto-optical drives.[2] The CZ-510C has an internal 2.5-inch SCSI hard disk; the CZ-500C has no cable for one.[2][13]

The rotary switch on the SCSI connector board sets the SCSI ID of the internal hard disk, not of the computer. The disk reads three of the 40 lines in the flat cable, and the control board leaves those lines unconnected.[3][14]

Connectors changed from the X68000

[edit | edit source]

Sharp brought several connectors into line with the Compact models. The stereoscope socket and the see-through colour socket were removed. The image input socket for the colour image unit changed from a 25-pin D-sub to a 30-pin half-pitch connector, the SCSI connector to a 50-pin half-pitch type, and the external floppy connector from a 37-pin D-sub to a 40-pin half-pitch connector. The half-pitch connectors are 3M-compatible.[15] Some X68000 peripherals cannot be used with it, and others need different cables.[15]

In the expansion slots the X68030 drops some signals that Sharp's own boards never used, and pin A35 carries an auto-vector signal, EXAVEC, in place of EXVPA.[16]

Memory backup

[edit | edit source]

The 16 KB SRAM that holds the memory switch settings and boot device, IC1 and IC2 on the main board, runs from a backup supply when the machine is off.[9][8] The backup cell, marked BATT, is on the control board and also keeps the RF5C15 clock chip running. The schematic shows it charged from VCC2 through R205 (1 kΩ), R204 (2.4 kΩ) and one diode of D206, so the original is a rechargeable cell; the schematic does not give its type.[4]

X68030 Compact

[edit | edit source]

The X68030 Compact (CZ-300C, ¥388,000) and X68030 Compact-HD (CZ-310C, 80 MB hard disk, ¥478,000) went on sale in May 1993.[1][2] They have the same processor and 4 MB of memory in an upright case that is not a twin tower, with 3.5-inch drives that read 2HD and 2DD discs and a keyboard without a numeric pad.[2] The Compact uses a different power supply, the SH7, shared with the X68000 Compact.[6][17] Its expansion slots lack the remote power and backup power lines of the tower model, and it has no SCSI ID switch.[16][13] The 060Turbo accelerator fits the CZ-500C and CZ-510C but not the Compact.[18] The repair guides linked below cover the tower models, the CZ-500C and CZ-510C.

Known faults

[edit | edit source]
  • The power supply is the SH4 type, and its electrolytic capacitors leak with age. Electrolyte that reaches the board can short the parts round R33 and R34 and destroy the power transistor beside them.[6][19] See the Sharp X68030 Troubleshooting Guide and the Sharp X68030 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
  • Sharp's schematic draws C27, C28 and C31 in the supply with reversed polarity marks; fit replacements by the board markings.[20][5]
  • The machine does not start if the SCSI connector board is unplugged.[13]
  • Floppy drives suffer from rust and dust round the head motor as well as from leaking capacitors.[12]
  • The backup cell on the control board loses charge or leaks, and the SRAM settings are then lost.[4][9]

  20. ↑ 【訂正】X68kの電源ユニットのシルク印刷に間違いがあった件&X68kの電源修理再び(未完)3– Fram, 2024—link(accessed 2026-10-21) Corrected 6 April: the silkscreen on the SH4 board is right and the service manual schematic is wrong; measured with a meter, C31 sits as the silkscreen shows; the schematic also draws C27 and C28 with reversed polarity and the transformer polarity dots cannot be trusted. A replacement ZD31 with stiff legs bent at the body had cracked and failed again.
