The Sharp MZ-80K2 is a personal computer that Sharp Corporation sold in Japan from 1980 as a factory-assembled version of the Sharp MZ-80K, which had been sold as a semi-kit. It has 32 KB of RAM as standard and, as far as software is concerned, is almost identical to the MZ-80K.[1][2] Like the MZ-80K it has the keyboard, a monochrome monitor and a cassette recorder in one case.[1] A cheaper version, the MZ-80K2E, followed in 1981.[1]
Differences from the MZ-80K
[edit | edit source]The Japanese Wikipedia article lists the changes from the MZ-80K:[1]
- Sold assembled, at the same price as the MZ-80K kit, 198,000 yen.
- 32 KB of RAM as standard, against 20 KB on the MZ-80K.
- A paler colour around the CRT, a redesigned surround for the keyboard, and key caps with a matt finish.
Sharp offered a typewriter-layout keyboard, the MZ-80TK, as an option for the MZ-80K2. The standard keyboard has the MZ-80K's grid layout.[1]
MZ-80K2E
[edit | edit source]The MZ-80K2E of 1981 was a cheaper MZ-80K2, priced at 148,000 yen, and also had 32 KB of RAM. It has green trim around the CRT, white key tops and two single-colour LEDs in place of the K2's two-colour LED. Its CPU is soldered directly to the board, without a socket.[1][2] On the MZ-80K, by contrast, all the major chips are in sockets.[3]
Hardware and documentation
[edit | edit source]SharpMZ.net lists a Japanese owner's manual for the MZ-80K2 but no service manual.[4] The nearest service document is Sharp's English Sharp MZ-80K Service Manual, which covers the European MZ-80K with its 220 V and 240 V power supplies.[5] The MZ-80K2 is a 100 V Japanese machine, so its power supply is not the one in that manual.[1][5] No published source compares the K2's CPU board with the MZ-80K's. Before using the MZ-80K manual's drawings and parts list on a K2, check the board's designators and chip types against them.
