The Sharp X68000 Compact (CZ-674C) has its own power supply, the SH7, which it shares with the X68030 Compact.[1][2] No capacitor list has been published for the SH7, the Compact's boards, its 3.5-inch drives or its keyboard, and Sharp's reissued X68000 service manuals cover only the XVI.[3] Every value has to be read from the parts on the board. What is known about the machine is set out below.

Warning: the supply runs from 100 V mains. On the SH4, the tower models' supply, the primary side holds more than 100 V DC after the plug is pulled.[4] Treat the SH7 the same way: unplug, measure across the large primary capacitor, and discharge it before touching the primary side.

Power supply (SH7)

[edit | edit source]
  • No capacitor list or diagram of the SH7 has been published for the X68000 Compact. Sharp has reissued the service manual for the X68030 Compact (CZ-300C, CZ-310C), which uses the same type of supply, as a free e-book on its COCORO BOOKS store.[1]
  • Poe notes that the SH7's T2 transformer is not interchangeable, so a transformer from another X68000 supply will not do as a replacement.[2]
  • The SH7 is a different supply from the towers' SH4. Do not order parts from the SH4 list on the Sharp X68000 XVI Capacitor Replacement Guide without checking each value on your board.[1]
  • Photograph the board and write down every capacitor's position, value, voltage and polarity before removing any.

Boards

[edit | edit source]

No capacitor list has been published for the Compact's main or other boards. Record each part before removing it, and replace like for like.

Floppy drives

[edit | edit source]

Poe lists the Compact's 3.5-inch drive parts as K36-0312-06, K36-0339-01 and Sankyo MSBA020K02, but gives no capacitor list for them.[2] This drive is a different type from the 5.25-inch drives of the other X68000s, so the capacitor lists on the other guides do not apply.[5] Check the drive's boards.

Keyboard

[edit | edit source]

The Compact's keyboard, DSETK0025CE01 (CMA-600N0), is shared with the X68030 Compact.[2] No capacitor list has been published for it. The original X68000 keyboard and the XVI keyboard both have two electrolytics, C3 (2.2 µF 50 V) and C8 (100 µF 10 V), but the Compact keyboard is a different, smaller design, so check the board.[2][6][7]

Replacement procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the machine, take the supply out, and measure and discharge the primary capacitor.[4]
  2. Photograph the supply board and note every capacitor's value, voltage and polarity.
  3. Replace the capacitors one at a time with the same value and an equal or higher voltage, following the polarity marked on the board.
  4. Inspect the board for burnt parts, cracked joints and a blown fuse. Kunichiko notes that an open transformer winding or a failed transistor will not show on inspection.[1]
  5. Test the supply before reconnecting it to the boards.
