Sharp MZ-2000 Owner's Manual

From RetroTechCollection

The Sharp MZ-2000 Owner's Manual is the Japanese owner's manual that Sharp supplied with the Sharp MZ-2000 personal computer in 1982. The hosted copy is a 157-page scan of the 152 printed pages and covers, taken from the Internet Archive.[1] Besides the operating instructions, it contains the full circuit diagrams of the computer, its display unit, cassette deck control board and power supply, and of the MZ-1R01 graphics board and MZ-1U01 expansion I/O unit.[2] Sharp included the circuit diagrams in the owner's manuals of its MZ machines up to the MZ-2200.[3]

The PDF page number is one more than the printed page number throughout.

The pages most useful for repair:

  • Section 3.1 (printed pages 36 to 41): the official way to open the case, lifting the upper cabinet on its support arm, with Sharp's warning not to switch on while it is raised.[4] The drawing of the raised cabinet is also hosted as File:Sharp MZ-2000 upper cabinet raised on its support arm (owner's manual).png.
  • Figure 4-18 (printed page 70): the power supply, with every fuse, regulator and capacitor value. It is also hosted as File:Sharp MZ-2000 power supply circuit (owner's manual).png.
  • Figure 4-16 (printed page 68): the display unit, with the tube, flyback transformer, fuse and adjustment controls.
  • Appendix A.3 (printed pages 149 and 150): specifications of the computer, CPU board, graphics board, power supply, display and cassette deck.[5]
  • Appendix A.4 (printed pages 151 and 152): Sharp's handling precautions, including head cleaning, screen burn and the upper cabinet.[6]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • There is no parts list, no adjustment or alignment procedure and no fault-finding section. Component values appear only on the circuit diagrams.
  • Some decimal points on the display unit diagram (figure 4-16) are missing from the scan. Values such as "4 7/25V" next to a capacitor, or "6 8K" next to a resistor, have a gap where the point should be; read the part on the board before ordering. See the Sharp MZ-2000 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
  • The cassette deck mechanism is not drawn: there are no exploded views and no belt, roller or damper part numbers.
  • The manual is for the MZ-2000 only. It does not describe the Sharp MZ-2200.
  • The listing of the IPL program is not here; the manual refers to the separate BASIC/Monitor Manual for it.[7]
