Sharp MZ-2000 General Maintenance

Routine work on the Sharp MZ-2000 covers opening the case the way Sharp intended, Sharp's own handling precautions, the cassette deck, the power supply rails and the display unit's controls. Component references come from the circuit diagrams in Sharp's owner's manual, which is in Japanese and is hosted with a description at Sharp MZ-2000 Owner's Manual.[1] The manual has no service procedures or parts list, so the owners' reports cited below fill some of the gaps.
Safety
[edit | edit source]Warning: the MZ-2000 has its mains wiring, transformer and power supply inside the case, and its built-in monitor runs at about 11 kV. Unplug the machine before lifting the upper cabinet.
On the power supply schematic, mains enters through the socket SO101 and the double-pole switch SW101 to the fuse F101 (T1A), the line filter L101 and the transformer T101, whose primary carries a thermal fuse. A second mains socket, wired after the switch, fuse and filter, feeds the MZ-1U01 expansion unit's own supply.[2][3] Sharp gives the picture tube's anode voltage as 11.0 kV at zero beam current, between 10.0 and 12.0 kV.[4] Discharge the tube before working near its anode lead or the display board; see CRT Discharge Procedure.
Opening the case
[edit | edit source]The MZ-2000 opens like a car bonnet: the upper cabinet, which holds the monitor and the cassette deck, hinges up from the front.[5] Sharp's procedure, from the owner's manual:[3]
- Switch the MZ-2000 off and pull out the mains plug.
- Remove the two fixing screws on the underside below the keyboard.
- Lift the upper cabinet gently from the front.
- Draw the support arm out from the underside of the upper cabinet and set its end in the hole in the lower cabinet.
Sharp warns not to switch the machine on with the upper cabinet raised, and not to leave screws or other metal parts inside.[3] Its handling notes also say not to use or store the machine with the upper cabinet open.[6]
Inside, the CPU board sits below the raised cabinet with the MZ-1R01 graphics board, where fitted, mounted directly above it.[5][3] The MZ-1U01 expansion unit fits in the bay at the rear and takes mains for its own supply from connector G on the main power supply's primary board through its connector F; unplug F before lifting the unit out.[3]
Handling and siting
[edit | edit source]Sharp's handling notes for the MZ-2000:[6]
- Run it on AC 100 V. Sharp warns that a much higher or lower supply can cause faults.
- Leave at least 10 seconds between switching off and switching on again, and do not plug in the mains lead with the power switch already on.
- Keep the ventilation holes clear; do not stand it on carpet or bedding or cover it with cloth.
- Clean the case with a soft cloth moistened with water or a mild detergent. Benzine and thinners can discolour it.
- Turn the brightness control at the back well down when the same picture stays on screen for a long time, to avoid burning the screen.
Sharp rates the machine for 0 to 35 °C in use and 80 % humidity or less.[4] The power supply is rated for AC 100 V ±10 % only, so where the mains is 220 to 240 V the machine needs a step-down transformer.[4]
Cassette deck
[edit | edit source]The deck's rewind, fast forward, stop and eject keys act directly on the motor and eject mechanism, independently of the computer, and its READ (green) and WRITE (red) lamps show when the computer is using it.[7] The deck runs at 4.75 cm/s and Sharp rates it for C15 to C60 tapes.[4]
- Clean the record and playback head once a month. Sharp suggests a commercial cleaning tape.[6]
- Inspect the pinch roller. Its rubber deteriorates with age and can melt; the Japanese Wikipedia article and an owner's page both report it.[8][9] If the roller has melted, clean the capstan and the tape path before fitting a replacement.
- Check the lid's oil damper for leaks. Ohishi describes oil leaking from the damper as a trouble particular to the MZ-2000; he replaced the damper and fitted the lid from an MZ-1T01 data recorder.[10]
The deck's solenoids and motor are driven from the cassette control board, which takes 5 V, 12 V and 15 V from the power supply.[11]
Power supply checks
[edit | edit source]The supply has two switching regulators and two linear ones. From Sharp's schematic:[2]
| Rail | Regulator | Fuse | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| +5 V | TL494CN switching regulator IC21 with Q21 and Q22, choke L21 and diode D22 (CTB24) | F21, T2.0A | Preset VR21 (1 kΩ) in the sense divider |
| +12 V | TL494CN switching regulator IC42 with Q41 and Q42, choke L41 and diode D42 (CTB24) | F41, T2.0A | Preset VR41 (1 kΩ) in the sense divider |
| +15 V | IC41, µPC7815H or TA78015AP | – | – |
| −5 V | IC1, µPC7805H or TA78005AP, with fusible resistor FR1 | – | – |
The output connector carries +15 V, +12 V, GND and +5 V, with −5 V on a separate lead.[2] The CPU board takes −5 V, +12 V and +5 V on its connector CN7, and passes them to the MZ-1R01 graphics board.[12] The display unit needs 12 V ±10 % at about 1.05 A.[4] Sharp's manual gives no adjustment procedure for VR21 or VR41.
Measure the rails with the machine running, on the output connector or at CN7 on the CPU board. This has to be done with the upper cabinet raised, which Sharp's manual warns against because of the risk of damage and electric shock;[3] keep hands and probes clear of the supply's mains side and of the display board. Ohishi found the supply's capacitors glued down and without visible bulging when he checked his machine's supply.[13]
Display unit
[edit | edit source]The user controls are the volume and brightness knobs at the back of the machine.[5] The other adjustments are presets on the display board:[14]
| Function | Reference | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast | R2002 | 500 Ω |
| Brightness | R2008 | 250 kΩ |
| Vertical hold | R2015 | 50 kΩ |
| Vertical size | R2025 | 20 kΩ |
| Vertical linearity | R2019 | 300 Ω |
| Horizontal hold | L2002 (coil) | – |
| Focus | R2047 | 1 MΩ |
The board takes 12 V through its own fuse, F01 (2 A).[14] Use a plastic trimming tool on the H-hold coil, and note each preset's position before turning it.
Expansion unit and options
[edit | edit source]- The MZ-1U01 expansion I/O unit has its own supply, with a transformer, a TL494CN switching regulator for +5 V and a T2A fuse.[15]
- Extra graphics pages (MZ-1R02) are sets of eight 16 Kbit dynamic RAMs plugged into sockets on the MZ-1R01.[4][8] Oh!MZ advised its readers that eight 4116-2 chips would do the same job.[5]
Capacitors
[edit | edit source]The electrolytic capacitors of the power supply, CPU board, display unit, cassette control board, MZ-1R01 and MZ-1U01 are listed, with the values printed on Sharp's schematics, in the Sharp MZ-2000 Capacitor Replacement Guide. General signs of failure are in Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Maintenance checklist
[edit | edit source]- Confirm the supply voltage: the MZ-2000 is a 100 V machine.
- Unplug, remove the two screws under the keyboard and raise the upper cabinet on its support arm.
- Look over the power supply, CPU board and display board for leaking or bulging capacitors and loose connectors.
- Clean the cassette head, and inspect the pinch roller and the lid damper.
- Close up and switch on. If the machine does not start, measure the four rails as described under power supply checks.
- Check that the IPL opens the deck lid and shows Make ready CMT with no tape inserted.[16]
