Sharp MZ-2200 General Maintenance

Routine work on the Sharp MZ-2200 covers opening the case, siting it, its front and rear controls, the MZ-1T02 data recorder and the power supply. No Sharp service document for the MZ-2200 is known to be online. Where a step depends on Sharp's documentation, the nearest source is the MZ-2000's owner's manual, used in the Sharp MZ-2000 General Maintenance guide. The MZ-2200 is the MZ-2000's successor, with the same basic specification and full software compatibility, but no built-in monitor or cassette deck.[1]

Safety

[edit | edit source]

Warning: the MZ-2200's mains wiring and power supply are inside the case. Unplug the machine before opening it.

The MZ-2200 has no built-in monitor, so there is no picture tube inside the computer.[1] The external monitor carries its own high voltages; see CRT Discharge Procedure before opening one.

Opening the case

[edit | edit source]

The case opens like a car bonnet. Remove the fixing screws, take hold of the front of the case and lift it; the top hinges up from the front, and a support rod mounted inside the lid holds it open while you work.[2] The article does not give the number or position of the screws. On the MZ-2000, Sharp's procedure uses two screws on the underside below the keyboard; see opening the MZ-2000's case.[3] Sharp's warning for the MZ-2000 not to switch on with the case raised is good practice here too.

In AKIBA PC Hotline's photograph of an opened MZ-2200, the main board lies left of centre with its rows of memory chips, the power supply sits at the rear right under a perforated metal cover with radial electrolytic capacitors visible on its board, and the round speaker is in front of the supply.[4]

Siting

[edit | edit source]
  • Do not stand a CRT monitor on the MZ-2200. The top is not built to carry one, and the flat rear part of the top is a ventilation outlet.[1][2]
  • Leave the vent at the rear of the top uncovered.[1]

Controls and connections

[edit | edit source]
MZ-2200 controls and sockets
Place Item
Front pocket, right RESET button, IPL button, volume slider and power lamp
Rear, left to right Power switch, MZ-1T02 power socket, MZ-1T02 signal socket, digital RGB output, monochrome output
Rear, below Built-in expansion unit

[2][1] The volume control is a slider, where the MZ-2000 has a knob at the back.[1]

MZ-1T02 data recorder

[edit | edit source]

The MZ-1T02 is the only data recorder that works with the MZ-2200. It has no mains lead: a square four-pin plug takes its power from the MZ-2200 and a 16-pin plug carries the signals.[5]

  • Check the pinch roller first. It can melt with age.[5][1]
  • Clean the record and playback head. Sharp's manual for the MZ-2000 asks for the built-in deck's head to be cleaned once a month, for example with a cleaning tape.[6]
  • Plug in both cables with the MZ-2200 switched off.

The recorder's keys are rewind, fast forward, stop and eject, and its READ and WRITE lamps light while the computer reads or writes.[5]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The MZ-2200's supply powers the computer, the built-in expansion unit (which, unlike the MZ-2000's MZ-1U01, has no supply of its own) and the MZ-1T02.[1][5] Its circuit is not documented online. The MZ-2000's supply gives +5 V, +12 V, +15 V and −5 V, with the CPU board fed −5 V, +12 V and +5 V; these are the rails to look for, but confirm them on the MZ-2200's own wiring before measuring.[7] One owner fitted a main board said to come from an MZ-2200 to an MZ-2000 and it started, which suggests the logic boards are close.[8]

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

What is known about the MZ-2200's electrolytic capacitors, and how to record them, is in the Sharp MZ-2200 Capacitor Replacement Guide. General signs of failure are in Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Maintenance checklist

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the MZ-2200 and the MZ-1T02.
  2. Remove the fixing screws and lift the case on its support rod.
  3. Look over the power supply, the main board and the expansion unit for leaking or bulging capacitors and loose connectors.
  4. Clean the MZ-1T02's head and check its pinch roller.
  5. Close up, reconnect the recorder and monitor with the power off, and switch on.
  6. Keep the monitor off the top of the case.
