Sharp MZ-6500 Capacitor Replacement Guide

Sharp MZ-5600 power supply circuit (service manual)
The MZ-5600 power supply board circuit, from Sharp's service manual

The Sharp MZ-6500's electrolytic capacitors are on the power supply board, the CPU board and the video board. The values below come from Sharp's service manual for the MZ-5600, the export version of the MZ-6500; Japanese MZ-6500 sets may differ, especially on the power supply.[1][2] The power supply parts list gives each capacitor with its reference; the CPU board list gives only the types used.

Before you start

[edit | edit source]
  • Unplug the machine. The supply's main reservoir, C3, is 10,000 µF; check it has discharged before touching the board.[3]
  • Follow Sharp's handling notes for the supply board: keep the jumper JP-1 intact, take care with the insulation sheet, and refit component screws to 4 kgf·cm and others to 6 kgf·cm. See the General Maintenance guide.[4]

MZ-5600 power supply electrolytic capacitors (parts list)
Reference Value Voltage Position on the circuit
C3, C22 10,000 µF 50 V C3: main 29 V reservoir
C1 330 µF 50 V −12 V regulator input
C2 100 µF 25 V −12 V output
C9 3,300 µF 10 V +5 V output
C10 1,000 µF 10 V +5 V output
C16, C17, C24 330 µF 25 V C16 and C17: +12 V output
C18 100 µF 25 V Switching controller circuit
C19, C21, C28 22 µF 50 V C19 and C28: switching drive circuit; C21: ALARM timing
C20 4.7 µF 50 V ALARM circuit

[3] Two points to check on the board before ordering:

  • The circuit marks C17 as 220 µF 25 V, while the parts list gives 330 µF.
  • The parts list includes C22 (10,000 µF 50 V) and C24 (330 µF 25 V), which do not appear on the circuit page.[3]

The primary board has film capacitors only: a 0.1 µF 250 V capacitor across the line and two 2200 pF line-bypass capacitors to earth.[5]

CPU board

[edit | edit source]

The CPU board parts list gives the electrolytic types used without their positions, so read the references from the CPU board circuits (PDF pages 90 onwards of the manual) or from the board itself.[6]

[6] The CPU board also carries the clock's rechargeable backup battery (UBATN1001ACZZ), which is not a capacitor but should be checked for leakage while the board is out.[6][7]

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Note each capacitor's polarity marking on the board before removing it.
  2. Fit parts of the same capacitance and the same or a higher voltage rating that fit the space.
  3. After work on the supply, check +5 V and +12 V against Sharp's limits (5 V ± 0.02 V and 12 V ± 0.05 V) and trim with VR1 and VR2 if needed.[8]
  4. Run the self check described in the Troubleshooting Guide.
