Sharp PC-1500 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

The Sharp PC-1500 documentation consists of four Sharp documents for the Sharp PC-1500 and Sharp PC-1500A pocket computers: the service manual, the PC-1500A service supplement, the instruction manual and the Technical Reference Manual.

PC-1500 & Option service manual

[edit | edit source]

The Service Manual, Model PC-1500 & Option is Sharp Corporation's service manual for the PC-1500, printed in Japan in February 1982 by the Industrial Instruments Group's Reliability & Quality Control Department at Yamatokoriyama. The hosted copy is a 36-page scan from Sharp Pocket Computers.[1][2]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • The parts list gives Sharp part codes and descriptions with no circuit designators and no quantities. Capacitors are identified by value and voltage only.
  • There is no disassembly procedure apart from the FPC replacement, and no adjustment procedure for the two trimmers (220 kΩ and 250 kΩ) beside the power supply module. The supply voltages are given as targets at 25 °C.
  • Despite the title, this scan holds the PC-1500 sections only. Sharp's CE-150 and other option service manuals were separate documents.

Figures it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Supply voltages: VGG 4.7 V, VCC 4.7 V ±0.02 V, VDISP 3.7 V ±0.01 V at 25 °C (printed page 18).
  • Electrolytic capacitors: two 10 V 220 µF on VGG and two 50 V 1 µF in the reset circuit (pages 21, 23 and 24, and the parts list).
  • The all-reset procedure and the FPC replacement method (pages 19 and 20).

PC-1500A service manual supplement

[edit | edit source]

The Model PC-1500A Service Manual is Sharp's 10-page supplement dated October 1982, to be filed with the PC-1500 & Option manual. It covers only what differs on the PC-1500A: four HM6116 RAM chips instead of one HM6116 and two TC5514P, 8.5 KB of RAM instead of 3.5 KB, renamed chip-select signals on the 40-pin module connector, the parts exclusive to the PC-1500A, the key and power supply circuit marked "same as PC-1500", and the PC-1500A main board drawing. It names the power regulator as the Hi-MIC MA1066 or EHM718L70.[3]

Instruction manual

[edit | edit source]

Sharp's English PC-1500 instruction manual (169-page scan, with a footer on each page added by the scanner, PC-1500.info) covers operation, BASIC programming, the RESERVE mode, the CE-150 printer and cassette interface, and appendices on abbreviations, battery replacement, the character set, error codes and a PC-1211 to PC-1500 command comparison. The operational notes, the all-reset trouble-shooting note, the specifications (PDF page 5) and the battery replacement procedure (PDF pages 144 to 145) are cited in the repair guides.[4]

Technical reference manual

[edit | edit source]

Sharp's PC-1500 Technical Reference Manual (162-page scan) was written for machine-language programmers. It describes the LH5801 processor and its instruction set, the LH5810 and LH5811 I/O port controller, the PC-1500 hardware (system configuration, power supplies, block diagram, chip select, memory map, 40-pin and 60-pin connector signals and the key matrix), system subroutines and programming examples, and ends with circuit diagrams of the PC-1500, CE-150, CE-151, CE-153, CE-155, CE-158 and CE-159. It notes that the 40-pin and 60-pin connectors may differ between product revisions and that either the LH5810 or the LH5811 is fitted.[5]
