Sharp PC-1360 Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Sharp PC-1360 main board capacitors (service manual)
The 3.3 µF capacitor (left) and the three 1 µF capacitors on the PC-1360 main board; the arrows show the fitting direction (Sharp service manual).

Capacitors in the Sharp PC-1360. Sharp's parts list for the main board has two polarised capacitor types, 1 µF and 3.3 µF 10 V, and the board drawing shows one 3.3 µF capacitor and three 1 µF capacitors beside the contrast control and the LCD divider resistors.[1][2] The drawing gives no designators. The rest of the capacitors are ceramics.

The board drawing carries three notes that matter when replacing them: the parts must be fitted in the direction of the arrows, the CSB768DMT resonator must be fitted within a marked area, and the 1 µF and 3.3 µF capacitors must be fitted within the board.[3]

Check the cells and their terminals before anything else; see Sharp PC-1360 General Maintenance and Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

PC-1360 capacitor list

[edit | edit source]
PC-1360 main board polarised capacitors (Sharp service manual)
Qty on drawing Value Rating Sharp part code Position
1 3.3 µF 10 V RC-SZ1021CCZZ Top left of the main board, near the contrast control[2][1]
3 1 µF Not stated RC-SZ1007CCZZ In a row along the top edge, beside the 30 kΩ and 10 kΩ divider resistors[2][1]

The PC-1360 parts list gives no voltage for the 1 µF part; the same Sharp code, RC-SZ1007CCZZ, is listed as 1 µF 6.3 V in the PC-1250/1251 service manual.[4] The PC-1350, whose main board has the same arrangement of one 3.3 µF and three 1 µF capacitors, has them as C1 to C4 on its circuit diagram; see Sharp PC-1350 Capacitor Replacement Guide.[5] Sharp's manuals do not say whether the RC-SZ parts are tantalum or aluminium.

RC-CZ1021CCZZ 0.1 µF
RC-CZ1035CCZZ 100 pF
RC-CZ1037CCZZ 0.01 µF

Signs of trouble

[edit | edit source]
  • Corrosion or residue round the 3.3 µF capacitor or the 1 µF row.
  • A faint or uneven display that the contrast control does not correct with fresh cells.
  • Current above Sharp's limits: 25 µA with the power off, 600 µA while displaying.[6]

Replacement

[edit | edit source]
  1. Copy or save the RAM card contents, then remove the cards and the cells.
  2. Use an anti-static strap.
  3. Note the polarity and the fitting direction of each part before removing it.[2][3]
  4. Remove each part with two irons or hot tweezers and clean the pads.
  5. Fit 3.3 µF rated 10 V or more and 1 µF rated at least 6.3 V, in the same package size, keeping each part within the board outline as Sharp requires.[3]
  6. Refit the cells and a card and run the built-in display test; see Sharp PC-1360 Troubleshooting Guide.

Checks after replacement
