Sharp PC-1360 General Maintenance

From RetroTechCollection
Sharp PC-1360 (service manual cover)
The PC-1360 as pictured on the cover of Sharp's service manual.

Routine care of the Sharp PC-1360. The PC-1360 runs at 6 V from two CR2032 lithium cells and keeps its user memory on plug-in RAM cards, each with its own lithium cell, so maintenance is mostly about cells, cards and their connectors.[1][2] There is no mains voltage inside.

Cells

[edit | edit source]
PC-1360 cells (Sharp service manual)[1][2]
Item Detail
Cells Two CR-2032 lithium cells, 6.0 V DC
Life About 120 hours, based on 10 minutes of operation and 50 minutes of display per hour at 20 °C
Replace when below 5.2 V (2.6 V per cell)
RAM card (CE-212M) Replace its cell when the terminal voltage falls below 2.5 V

The PC-1360 manual's note on judging cell life names the PC-1350, apparently carried over from that model's manual; the 5.2 V and 2.5 V thresholds are the ones it gives.[2]

Sharp's PC-1350 manual adds a re-initialisation step with CALL and POKE commands after a cell change. The PC-1360 manual gives no such step, and the PC-1350's addresses should not be assumed to apply to the PC-1360.[3]

RAM cards

[edit | edit source]
  • The PC-1360 takes the CE-210M (2 KB), CE-211M (4 KB), CE-212M (8 KB), CE-2H16M (16 KB) and CE-2H32M (32 KB) in its two slots. The PC-1350's CE-201M and CE-202M cannot be used.[4][1]
  • A card can be copied from slot 1 to slot 2. Do this before working on a machine or a card whose contents matter.[1]
  • Sharp gives the CE-212M's consumption as about 25 µA at most.[2]
  • The memory board connects to the cards through a PWB card connector (part PGUMS1549CCZZ). Keep the card contacts clean.[5]

Connectors

[edit | edit source]

The 11-pin connector for the CE-126P printer and cassette interface is on the left side, and the 15-pin serial connector is on the right side.[6][1] The serial port works at CMOS levels (4 to 6 V), not RS-232 levels.[4] Keep the 15-pin connector cover (part GFTAA1287CCSB) fitted when nothing is connected.[5]

Sharp's service checks include a continuity test: the resistance between the slot-2 side static panel and the right upper edge of the panel surface must be below 5 Ω.[7] If the case has been apart, check it after reassembly.

Display and contrast

[edit | edit source]

The LCD connects to the main board through a rubber connector (part PGUMS1550CCZZ) and is held by LCD fixing tape.[5] The contrast is set by a 20 kΩ variable resistor.[8] If dots or lines are missing, clean and reseat the connector before suspecting the LCD.

Cleaning and handling

[edit | edit source]
  • Wipe the case with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Use an anti-static strap when the case is open; the logic is CMOS.[4]
  • Take the cells out for long storage, after copying or saving anything on the RAM cards.

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

The main board has one 3.3 µF and three 1 µF polarised capacitors, which Sharp says must be fitted within the board outline.[8][5] See Sharp PC-1360 Capacitor Replacement Guide.

Preventive maintenance checklist

[edit | edit source]
  1. Copy or save the RAM card contents.
  2. Check the cells against 5.2 V and the card cell against 2.5 V.
  3. Clean the RAM card contacts and the 11-pin and 15-pin connectors.
  4. Run the built-in display and key tests; see Sharp PC-1360 Troubleshooting Guide.
  5. Check the contrast with fresh cells.
