The Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 is a compact single-pass colour flatbed scanner that Apple introduced in 1996. It scans at 300 × 600 dpi optically (2400 × 2400 dpi interpolated) with 27 bits of colour depth, uses a xenon lamp, and connects over SCSI-2.[1][2] It came with Apple's OneScanner Dispatcher software, Xerox TextBridge 3.0 OCR and a Photoshop acquire plug-in, and it took an optional 20-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (M4526G/A).[1] Apple's Tech Info Library articles on it date from February 1996.[3]
The 600/27 is much smaller and lighter than the earlier Apple Color OneScanner, and it shares its basic design with the later Apple Color OneScanner 1200/30: the same xenon optical assembly layout, the same J101 power supply voltages, the same carriage lock and the same SCSI ID switch.[4] The Apple OneScanner Dispatcher software does not support the original Color OneScanner.[5]

The user's manual for the 600/27 and 1200/30 asks for a 68030 or later processor, at least 12 MB of RAM and 20 MB of free disk space.[8] The hardware can scan down to 12 dpi, but the Dispatcher software's lowest setting is 60 dpi.[9] The 600/27 has no transparency adapter and cannot scan slides or negatives; the Transparent Media Adapter fits only the 1200/30.[10][8]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]The scanner has a logic board, a power supply board, an inverter board for the lamp, a drive motor with gear and bracket, a home position sensor (photo-interrupter) and the optical assembly, which carries the xenon lamp, two mirrors and the CCD unit.[2] Apple warns service staff to lift the optical assembly by its long sides only: the CCD board on the short front side is delicate, and touching it or the mirrors can leave the scanner not working.[2] On a single-mirror flatbed, dust on the mirror shows as straight vertical lines. The 600/27 has two mirrors, and dust on them shows as black arcs of different sizes.[11]
