Apple Color StyleWriter 1500
The Apple Color StyleWriter 1500 is an entry-level ink-jet printer that Apple introduced on 19 February 1996.[1] It is a development of the StyleWriter 1200 and takes one cartridge at a time: a black cartridge (the same one the StyleWriter 1200 uses) or a three-colour cyan, magenta and yellow cartridge that also prints a composite black.[2] Apple's Service Source is titled StyleWriter 1500 and uses both names; the rating label on the printer reads "Color StyleWriter 1500", model M3374, 13.5 V DC 1.0 A.[2][3]
Apple's service manual lists the hardware changes from the StyleWriter 1200: a sheet feeder redesigned for the engine supplier's new paper-feed scheme, a matching cover over the controller and feed rollers, no error LED, no output tray, and an external power adapter in place of an internal supply. The driver added two print modes, Fine (360 dpi) and Smooth (720 × 360 dpi).[2]

Cartridges
[edit | edit source]| Item | Order number |
|---|---|
| Apple Color StyleWriter Color Ink Cartridge (print head and cyan, magenta, yellow tanks in one unit) | M4609G/A |
| StyleWriter Series Black Ink Cartridge | M8041G/C |
Apple's 1995 supplies data sheet gives M8041G/C as the cartridge for the StyleWriter, StyleWriter II, Portable StyleWriter and StyleWriter 1200, compatible with the Canon BJ-100, BJ-200, BJ-200e and Fax-B340.[6] The colour cartridge has no separate tanks: when one colour runs out, the whole cartridge is replaced.[5]

| Carriage release clip; shaft clip | 922-0197; 922-0196 |
Removing the logic board means disconnecting CNR, CNH, CNV and CNLF; the paper feed motor plugs into CNV, the home-position sensor is read at CNH pin 29, and the symptom charts measure the carriage motor at CNCR.[2] The Service Source gives three measurements: the adapter's output should be 11.5-15.5 V, each carriage motor winding about 7 Ω, and the home-position sensor 4.8 V ± 0.2 V with the carriage at home. See the troubleshooting guide.[2]
Test page and demo units
[edit | edit source]Switch the printer on and hold the online key for at least six seconds. The test page shows the ROM revision and a nozzle pattern, with different pages for the black and colour cartridges.[2] The cleaning chapter gives a second method: plug in the adapter and hold the power button until the test page starts.[2]
A limited number of 1500s were sold to Apple resellers with a demo page in the logic board ROM. They are serviced like any other 1500, but a replacement logic board loses the demo page.[2]
Software
[edit | edit source]The Color StyleWriter 1500 software also drives the original StyleWriter, the StyleWriter II and the StyleWriter 1200, and replaces PrintMonitor with desktop printing.[5] It needs a Macintosh with a 68020 or later processor (not a Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic, Portable or PowerBook 100), System 7.1 or later and at least 4 MB of RAM.[5]
