Apple Color StyleWriter 2200
The Apple Color StyleWriter 2200 is a small colour bubble-jet printer that Apple introduced in June 1995.[1] Apple's service manual calls it "a desktop color bubble-jet printer for personal use", but it is only 57 mm high, weighs 1.4 kg and can run from a NiCad battery pack that clips to its underside.[2] It prints with QuickDraw from the Macintosh and has no processor or page description language of its own.[1]
The printer takes one of two cartridges, each with its print head built in: a high-performance black cartridge or a four-colour cartridge holding separate black and cyan/magenta/yellow ink tanks.[2] The case is dark grey.[3]

Cartridges and ink tanks
[edit | edit source]| Item | Part number |
|---|---|
| High-performance black ink cartridge | M3909G/A |
| Black ink tank for the black cartridge | M3910G/A |
| Four-colour ink cartridge | M3908G/A |
| Black ink tank for the four-colour cartridge | M3912G/A |
| Three-colour (cyan, magenta, yellow) ink tank | M3911G/A |
When one tank of the four-colour cartridge runs out, only that tank needs replacing. After fitting a new cartridge or tank, switch the printer on and press the purge button.[2]
Battery attachment
[edit | edit source]
The battery attachment (Apple part 922-1594) fixes to the underside of the printer and is released by turning a thumbwheel. The NiCad battery (661-0697) is released by pushing in a latch; line up the arrows when refitting it.[2] When the battery runs low, the driver reports "Battery low, recharge battery", which the Service Source lists as the battery error.[2] A NiCad pack that has sat flat for years may be swollen or leaking; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Hardware
[edit | edit source]Apple serviced the printer at module level. The exploded view lists these modules:[2]
| Part | Apple part number |
|---|---|
| Controller board | 661-0257 |
| Print unit assembly | 661-0240 |
| Panel board | 922-3134 |
| Ribbon cable | 922-1481 |
| Top cover | 922-1479 |
| Upper case cover | 922-1480; 922-2326 (Rev. B) |
| Bottom case | 922-1482 |
| Battery attachment | 922-1594 |
| NiCad battery | 661-0697 |
| Power adapter and cable | 922-1281 (110 V); 992-1282 (220 V, as printed) |
The waste ink absorbers are part of the print unit assembly. A "Waste ink absorbers full" message is cured by replacing the print unit, after which the waste ink count held in the EEPROM on the controller board must be reset.[2] The Service Source has no schematic, no component list and no figures for the adapter's output.[2]
Software
[edit | edit source]The Service Source directs the technician to the Color StyleWriter 2400 printing software from the Service Source Companion CD, and to select the Color StyleWriter 2200 in the Chooser.[2] The driver's error messages and the Utilities button in the Print dialog (print head cleaning) are covered in the troubleshooting guide.
