The Apple Color StyleWriter 4500 is a colour ink-jet printer that Apple introduced on 16 June 1997, alongside the Apple Color StyleWriter 4100.[1] Apple's Service Source covers the two together as the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series. It lists three differences: the 4500 can make photo-quality prints with a PhotoGrade cartridge, can print on banner (z-fold) paper, and prints slightly faster.[2] The Service Source gives HP cartridge numbers alongside Apple's for every cartridge.[2]

Cartridges

[edit | edit source]

The cartridges carry generic labels with no Apple logo or Apple part number; identify them by the small number on the label.[2]

Cartridge cross-reference (Service Source, p. 12)[2]
Apple number Cartridge Label (HP) number
M5694G/A Colour (4100 and 4500) 6107
M5693G/A Black (4100 and 4500) 6106
M5692G/A Color PhotoGrade (4500 only) 6104

The 4500 came with all three cartridges. For photographs, the PhotoGrade cartridge replaces the black cartridge; it holds cyan, magenta and yellow dyes mixed with a black pigment, and must be used with PhotoGrade paper. It cannot be used in the 4100.[2]

[edit | edit source]

For banners, choose Banner US Letter or Banner A4 in Page Setup, slide the banner lever right until it clicks, empty the input tray, flip up the banner support, load the paper with a torn edge at the top facing lengthwise into the printer, set the adjusters and print. Press Resume to feed out the rest of the banner.[2] After a new logic board, mechanical assembly or cartridges, banner printing must be recalibrated with Apple's Color StyleWriter 4500 Banner Calibration utility; see banner calibration.[2]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]
Selected parts (Service Source, exploded view p. 165)[2]
Part 4500 4100
Logic board 661-1431 661-1354
Mechanical assembly 661-1430 661-1355
Capping assembly 922-2854 922-3009
Purge unit 922-2855
Carriage motor; paper feed motor 922-2846; 922-2852
Carriage belt; sensor board 922-2851; 922-2834
AC power adapter 922-2859

Apple's Special Servicing Considerations page gives different capping assembly numbers (922-3010 for the 4100, 922-2855 for the 4500) from the exploded view, which lists 922-2855 as the purge unit; check against current parts information before ordering.[2] Apple warns not to touch any mechanical assembly screw that the Take Apart chapter does not call out: doing so puts the printer out of alignment and means a new mechanical assembly.[2]

Software

[edit | edit source]

The Color StyleWriter 4500 driver version 1.1 or later is needed with Power Macintosh G3 computers; earlier versions give no response.[2]
