Apple LaserWriter Pro 630
The Apple LaserWriter Pro 630 is a 600 dpi, 8 page per minute PostScript Level 2 laser printer that Apple sold from January 1993 to September 1994.[1] It and the Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 are the same printer with different I/O boards: the Pro 630 board adds Ethernet and SCSI to the Pro 600's LocalTalk, serial and parallel ports.[2] The engine is a Canon LBP-B270 according to Apple's Service Source; the owner's guide calls it a Canon EX.[2][3]
The Pro 600 and 630 share every engine part, so they share one maintenance guide and one troubleshooting guide: Apple LaserWriter Pro 600/630 General Maintenance and Apple LaserWriter Pro 600/630 Troubleshooting Guide.[2] The fuser needs at least 5 minutes switched off to cool before it is handled, and Apple forbids removing the cover of the laser/scanner assembly at any time.[2]

Apple's figures for size and weight differ between documents: 11.61 × 16.69 × 16.37 in and 40.7 lb with cassette in the Service Source and Service Guide, 39 lb in the owner's guide, and 12.1 × 16.8 × 16.9 in and 39 lb on Apple's specification page.[2][3][1]
I/O board
[edit | edit source]
The Pro 630 board (661-0800) has the configuration switch, LocalTalk, RS-232, Ethernet, SCSI and Centronics ports on its back panel, two SIMM sockets, four ROMs (UU, UM, LM, LL), a ROM SIMM slot and a 40-pin processor direct slot (J13).[2][4] The Pro 600 board (661-0799) is the same layout without the SCSI and Ethernet ports.[4]
Memory
[edit | edit source]The board takes two 72-pin SIMMs. Apple's rules are:[2][4]
- Socket 1 takes a SIMM with one or two DRAM banks.
- Socket 2 takes a single-bank SIMM only, and only when socket 1 also holds a single-bank SIMM. Never fit a two-bank SIMM in socket 2.
Apple's specification page lists 80 ns SIMMs of 4, 8 or 16 MB.[1]
Hard disks
[edit | edit source]Up to seven external SCSI hard disks can be connected to the Pro 630; the Pro 600 takes none. The printer itself is SCSI ID 6, so each disk needs a different ID. The push-button switch on the back sets the communication ports and is not a SCSI ID switch.[2] An internal disk, available only from third parties with its own bracket and cable, connects to J1 on the Pro 630 board, a 40-pin connector with non-standard 2 mm pin spacing.[2]
PDS expansion
[edit | edit source]Third-party boards fit the processor direct slot. If a small orange jumper is fitted on the PDS connector, remove it before installing a board.[2]
Ports and settings
[edit | edit source]The configuration switch sets the protocol and language for all ports at once; positions 6-9 can be changed with the LaserWriter Utility.[2][5] Apple's service guide gives the mini DIN-8 RS-422 pin-out as 1 HSKo, 2 HSKi, 3 TxD−, 4 GND, 5 RxD−, 6 TxD+, 7 GPi, 8 RxD+.[6] The LaserWriter Utility must be version 7.4 or later, and the LaserWriter driver 7.2 or later to override defaults from the Print dialog.[2]
Startup and configuration pages
[edit | edit source]The printer prints a startup page 2-3 minutes after switch-on, which shows that the I/O board works. It lists the printer name, the communication settings, the language for each port, the ROM version, whether FinePrint, PhotoGrade and 600 dpi are on, the installed RAM, any hard disk on line, the optional feeders and the I/O board's page count.[2] The configuration page, printed from the LaserWriter Utility, adds the network address, the RAM allocation and an EEPROM check, the switch settings, the LaserJet emulator version, the serial number, timeouts, the administrator password, the SCSI ID, halftone screens and margin offsets. Apple asked technicians to print one before calling for help.[2]
PhotoGrade
[edit | edit source]With PhotoGrade on, the Pro 630 prints at 300 dpi with more grey levels.[2][3] Apple's documents disagree on the memory needed. The owner's guide and the Service Source specifications say 8 MB; the Service Source's troubleshooting table 24 says 12 MB for PhotoGrade at 600 dpi.[7][2][8]
Fault-finding
[edit | edit source]The Pro 630 uses the same self-diagnostic as the Pro 600: a jumper between pins 7 and 9 of the DE-9 serial connector. The light codes, Apple's 36 troubleshooting tables and the C202 fuser-capacitor procedure are on Apple LaserWriter Pro 600/630 Troubleshooting Guide.[2]
