The Apple Color StyleWriter 2500 is a colour bubble-jet printer that Apple introduced on 19 February 1996.[1] It is built on the chassis of the Apple Color StyleWriter 2400 and takes the same black and four-colour cartridges, but it runs from an external AC adapter and has no internal power supply or fuse.[2] Its best mode is 720 × 360 dpi in colour as well as in black, and it added the Color PhotoGrade cartridge for photographic prints.[3][2]

Apple's own documents disagree on speed and power. The Service Source gives 3 pages per minute black, 0.3 colour and 20 W; the October 1996 data sheet and the technical specification page give 5 pages per minute black, 0.66 colour and 27.6 W.[2][3][1]

The data sheet lists the printable line as 8.1 in, with minimum margins of 0.2 in left and right, 0.1 in at the top and 0.28 in at the bottom. It requires a Macintosh or PowerBook with a 68020 or later processor, or a Power Macintosh, with 5 MB of RAM and System 7.1 or later, and supports QuickDraw GX.[3]

Cartridges and PhotoGrade

[edit | edit source]
Cartridges and supplies (data sheet; Service Source pp. 8-11)[3][2]
Item Order number
Color Ink Cartridge (print head, colour tank, black tank) M3328G/A
High-Performance Black Ink Cartridge M3240G/A
Colour ink tank; black ink tank M3329G/A; M3330G/A
Color PhotoGrade Print Kit (cartridge, paper, updater software) M5577LL/A (M5577**/A, localised)
Color PhotoGrade Ink Cartridge M5579G/A
Color PhotoGrade Paper M5578G/A (Letter); M5581G/A (A4)

The PhotoGrade cartridge holds four ink tanks and the print head in one unit. Apple says the kit's cartridge, paper and updater software must be used together for photographic results; the updater does not support QuickDraw GX.[2] The printer was sold with only the four-colour cartridge; the black cartridge was optional.[4]

Test page and demo units

[edit | edit source]

Switch the printer on and hold the online key for at least six seconds. The test page shows the ROM revision and a nozzle pattern; there is one page for the black cartridge and one for the four-colour cartridge.[2]

Apple sold a limited number of 2500s to resellers with a demo page in the logic board ROM. They are serviced like any other 2500, but a replacement logic board loses the demo page; Apple's instruction was to return such a unit to Finished Goods if the feature was needed.[2]

Hardware

Power adapter 922-2194
Carriage unit; carriage belt; carriage cable 922-1912; 922-1146; 922-1904
Carriage motor; paper feed motor 922-1907; 922-1906
Purge unit 922-1143
Ink absorbers (kit) 076-0470
Eject roller; roller and spring kit 922-1913; 076-0471
Cut sheet feeder; pick-up roller; paper support 922-1903; 922-1914; 922-2065
Front cover; top case; rear cover 922-1908; 922-1909; 922-1910
Bottom case with feet 922-1911

The purge unit, carriage belt, ink absorber kit and roller kit numbers are the same as the 2400's; the logic board, covers, motors and carriage are not.[2][5] When the printer does not power up, Apple's chart has the technician measure the adapter's output: no voltage means a new adapter, a voltage in range means a new logic board.[2] The Service Source does not print the adapter's output voltage.

Networking

[edit | edit source]

The LocalTalk module (M4615ZM/A) clips into the rear case and plugs into the serial port. Use the later version, labelled for both the 2400 and 2500; the earlier module works only with the 2400. The StyleWriter EtherTalk Adapter (M4775LL/A) connects to the printer's serial cable and has its own power adapter.[2][3]
