The Macintosh HDI-20 External 1.4MB Floppy Disk Drive is Apple's external floppy drive for the PowerBook 100 and the PowerBook Duo, neither of which has a floppy drive inside. It plugs into the HDI-20 floppy port on the back of the PowerBook 100, or on a Duo Floppy Adapter or Duo MiniDock.[1][2][3] Apple's Duo Service Source notes that the Duo uses the same drive as the PowerBook 100.[2] The Duo Dock has its own internal floppy drive and does not need it.[4]

The Apple Catalog described it as a low-power drive and said that, with Macintosh PC Exchange, it reads MS-DOS formatted disks.[3] Apple's October 1994 Apple Facts lists it among the PowerBook Duo accessories, and the 1993 sheet lists it as a MiniDock accessory.[8][9]

Faults

[edit | edit source]

Apple's Duo symptom charts for the external drive work outwards from the disc:[10]

External floppy drive faults (PowerBook Duo symptom charts)[10]
Symptom Action, in Apple's order
Picture and sound present, but the drive does not work Check the adapter's connection to the PowerBook; try a known-good disk; check, then replace, the drive cable; replace the floppy adapter; replace the drive; replace the logic board
Disk ejects at start-up, Mac icon with a blinking X Try a known-good system disk; check that the trackball or mouse button is not held down; drive cable; floppy adapter; drive; logic board
Disk will not eject Hold the mouse or trackball button down while switching on, or push a straightened paper clip into the hole beside the slot; drive cable; floppy adapter; drive; logic board
Initialisation fails; read, write or copy errors Known-good disk; drive cable; floppy adapter; drive

On a MiniDock the charts are the same, with the MiniDock logic board as the last step.[11] See Floppy Drive Repair for cleaning and repairing the mechanism. Take care with the flexible cables inside: one 68kMLA member broke the ribbon cable to the motor while lifting the board out of his drive.[12]

Other PowerBook external drives

[edit | edit source]

The PowerBook 2400c used its own external floppy drive, which Apple listed as the PowerBook 2400c External Floppy Drive, M5853LL/A.[13] Later PowerBooks put the floppy drive in an expansion bay module; see Apple PowerBook Expansion Bay Modules#Floppy drive modules.
