The Apple Multiple Scan 1705 Display (M4434LL/A) is a low-cost 17-inch shadow-mask colour monitor with a 15.8-inch viewable image. Apple supplied it with a Macintosh-to-VGA adapter so it could also be used with IBM PC-compatible computers with VGA or better graphics.[1] Apple's October 1995 Apple Facts marks it as a new product and calls it Apple's most affordable full-page colour display.[2] Apple's data sheet for it is dated October 1995.[3]

The anode runs at 25 kV.[4] Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening the case.

Controls

[edit | edit source]

The display stores the user's picture settings in its own memory and restores them at power-on. Hold SELECT until the indicator lights for the setting wanted (horizontal centre, width, vertical centre, height, picture curvature, side alignment), then use DOWN and UP. DEGAUSS degausses the tube. Pressing DOWN and UP together restores the factory settings. The indicator light goes out 10 seconds after the last adjustment, by design.[5][6]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

The video board and main deflection board come out together with the rear fence, and Apple treats them as one module because they cannot be separated without risk to the CRT connector. Connectors P302, P702 and P703 are stiff: release their tabs with a small screwdriver first.[7] Internal controls include high voltage (VR501), horizontal raster centre (VR701), focus (VR F1 and F2 on the flyback), screen, sub-contrast (VR704), ABL (VR703), sub-brightness (VR305), red and green drive (VR302, VR301) and red and green bias (VR303, VR304).[8]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

Apple's symptom charts and its no-raster flowchart lead through the cable, the computer's video, the high voltage and a 6 V check at CRT socket pin H before replacing the main deflection and video boards. See Apple Multiple Scan 1705 Display Troubleshooting Guide.

Apple's service documents give no schematic, parts list or component values for this display.
