The Apple Numeric Keypad II (model A2M0056) is an external numeric keypad for the Apple II and Apple II Plus, whose keyboards have no numeric pad. Apple's February 1984 dealer price list gives its suggested retail price as US$139.95.[1] It is a revised, Apple-branded version of The Keyboard Company's numeric keypad for the Apple II.[2]
The Keyboard Company keypad
[edit | edit source]The Keyboard Company (TKC) mass-produced Apple II keyboards, and its numeric keypad was its first peripheral for Apple computers. Apple later acquired the company, which became Apple's Accessory Products Division.[2]

Connection
[edit | edit source]The Apple II and II Plus have no keypad connector. The Keypad II uses an interface board that sits between the keyboard and the logic board: the keyboard's ribbon cable plugs into J1 on the interface board, the interface board's P2 plugs into the keyboard connector at A7 on the Apple logic board, and the keypad's shielded cable plugs into P3, with pin 1 at the purple wire. Apple's Figure A shows the pin 1 alignment for each of the three connections.[3]
Layout and switches
[edit | edit source]Apple's Figure D shows the layout: Escape, left arrow, right arrow and Space in the left column; 7 to 9, 4 to 6, 1 to 3, then 0, 00 and a decimal point in the centre; brackets, minus, divide, plus, multiply, Return and Print on the right.[3]
Apple's keyswitch identification chart gives the Keypad II switch as the SMK short-stem keyswitch 705-0075, alongside an earlier switch it marks obsolete, and gives the keypad's service number as 661-95092 (obsolete).[3] The TKC keypad it was developed from uses Alps integrated dome switches.[2]

Troubleshooting and repair
[edit | edit source]Apple's procedure isolates the fault by swapping modules in order: confirm the fault with the keyboard test on the Dealer Diagnostic diskette, then swap the interface board, then the cable, then the keypad assembly, testing after each swap and refitting the original part if the swap does not cure it. Switch the Apple II off and unplug the power cord before swapping anything.[3]
Inside the keypad, the cable plugs into the keypad assembly with the grooves of its connector facing up, and a ground wire is soldered to the upper left of the keypad board. The case top comes off after the four screws are removed, two of them under the rubber feet. When reassembling, lay the cable so that it points down as it leaves the case and keep all the wires inside the bottom half so none is pinched.[3]
