Routine care and Apple's service schedule for the LaserWriter Pro 600 and LaserWriter Pro 630, which share every part except the I/O board.[1] Fault-finding is on Apple LaserWriter Pro 600/630 Troubleshooting Guide.

Safety

[edit | edit source]
  • Switch off and unplug the printer before servicing it. It runs at high voltages.[1]
  • Never disconnect the beam-detect cabling or the laser shutter with the printer on, and never remove the cover of the laser/scanner assembly, on or off. The beam is invisible and a reflection off a screwdriver can damage eyesight.[1]
  • Leave the printer off for at least 5 minutes before touching the fuser rollers.[1] The owner's guide gives the fixing roller temperature as around 400 °F (204 °C).[2]
  • Toner is plastic, iron and a little pigment. Remove it from skin and clothes with a dry tissue, then wash in cold water; hot water makes it set into fabric. Keep it off vinyl.[1]
  • The printer weighs 40.7 lb (18.5 kg) with its cassette.[1] Apple's owner's guide says to lift it with two people, holding the bottom where the cassette goes and never the top cover or paper exit cover. Take out the toner cartridge and the cassette before moving it, wrap the cartridge in its foil bag if possible, and push in the tray extensions.[2]
  • Never use an ammonia-based cleaner on or near the printer. Apple says it reacts with the toner and with the plastic case.[2]

Apple's owner's guide also says not to lubricate the printer and not to put anything on top of it.[2]

At each toner cartridge change

[edit | edit source]

A LaserWriter Pro cartridge lasts about 6,000 pages. Low Toner can mean the toner needs spreading: take the cartridge out, rock it a few times and refit it, and replace it only if the light stays on. Apple warned that cartridges other than its own may not fit and that refilled cartridges can affect print quality.[2]

  1. Open the top cover and lift the used cartridge out with both hands.
  2. Clean the antistatic teeth with the green-handled cleaning brush and clip the brush back in its holder.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and rock it gently to spread the toner.
  4. Bend the flat tab on the side back and forth until it separates, then pull the sealing tape straight out. Pulling at an angle or too fast can break the tape.
  5. Fit the cartridge with both hands, following the arrow on top, and check it is fully seated. Close the cover.

[2]

Cover a cartridge whenever it is out of the printer. Light on the drum causes print faults; a drum that has been exposed recovers after about 24 hours in the dark.[1]

Wipe the outside with a soft cloth dampened with water, with mild soap if needed, with the printer unplugged. Keep liquid out of the power inlet.[2]

Apple's service schedule

[edit | edit source]

Apple's recommended service interval is 200,000 pages, and its minimum life for the printer five years or 450,000 pages.[2] The Service Source gives these service lives for the wearing parts:[1]

Consumable service lives (Service Source) and part numbers (Service Guide Vol. 2)
Part Service life Apple part number
Cassette pickup roller 200,000 pages 922-0280
Multipurpose tray pickup roller 200,000 pages 922-0281
Separation pad (in the multipurpose tray guide assembly) 200,000 pages 922-0286 (guide assembly)
Fuser assembly 200,000 pages 661-0805 (110/115 V), 661-0806 (220/240 V)
Transfer roller 200,000 pages 922-0205
Exhaust fan 25,000 hours 922-0202

[1][3]

Replace the multipurpose pickup roller and the separation pad together.[1] Apple's parts list sells the fuser's wearing parts separately as well: upper fuser roller 922-0300, lower fuser roller 922-0301, heating bulb 922-0310 (110/115 V) or 922-0311 (220/240 V), thermistor 922-0312, thermoprotector 922-0313 and delivery-sensing lever 922-0308.[3]

Fuser levers

[edit | edit source]

Two small levers, one at each end of the fuser, set the rollers to print mode (both levers down) or jam-release mode (both up). Apple ships the printer in jam-release mode, and the owner's guide has the user press a green latch to release the rollers when clearing a jam from the fuser. Rollers left in jam-release mode give loose toner and smudging.[1][4]

Paper and envelopes

[edit | edit source]

Use 20-24 lb laser or photocopy paper in the cassettes and up to 32 lb from the multipurpose tray. Do not use heat-transfer transparencies, which can separate inside the printer. Envelopes must not have clasps, snaps, windows or pressure-sensitive seals, and must stand 400 °F (204 °C) without melting or discolouring.[2][1] Apple's first check for bad registration is to print with less paper in the source.[5]

Where to put it

[edit | edit source]

Apple's operating range is 10-32.5 °C and 20-80% relative humidity; the owner's guide says it works best at 18-25 °C and 30-70% humidity. Keep it out of direct sunlight, leave at least 10 cm (3.94 in) clear at the exhaust vent and 59.7 cm (23.5 in) of height for the cover, and keep open flames away.[1][2]

Power supply and mains voltage

[edit | edit source]

The power supply and the fuser are different parts for the two mains voltages: power supply 661-0802 (110/115 V) or 661-0803 (220/240 V), fuser 661-0805 or 661-0806.[3] US and Japanese printers run on 100-115 V and European and Australian ones on 220-240 V.[3]

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

Apple's documents for these printers give no component-level parts list and no capacitor values, so there is no recapping guide. The only capacitors named are C201 and C202 on the DC controller. C202 holds the printer in a fuser error after a heating fault for about 10 minutes; the discharge procedure is on the troubleshooting page.[1]

Memory and the I/O board

[edit | edit source]
  • The board has two 72-pin SIMM sockets. Socket 1 takes a single- or double-bank SIMM; socket 2 takes only a single-bank SIMM, and only when socket 1 also holds a single-bank SIMM.[1][3]
  • Remove the small orange jumper on the processor direct slot connector, if fitted, before installing a PDS card.[1]
  • After replacing the DC controller, the paper pickup block or the laser/scanner, Apple requires the registration adjustment; it is on the troubleshooting page.[1]
