The Philips CDI 470 is a CD-i player in a mini-component case sized to fit beside a 26 cm wide hi-fi system. ICDIA describes it as having all the features of the higher-end players while being priced in the low-cost 400 range.[8] It loads discs from a front tray and runs on the "small player" version of Philips's Mono IV main board, which it shares with the Philips CDI 490.[3][9] Philips's service manual for the CDI 470/00, /05 and /06 is dated July 1995.[3]

History

[edit | edit source]

Wikipedia says the CD-i 400 series, which included the 450, 470 and 490, was shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago in June 1994.[10] The CDI 490 was the same player with 32 KB of NVRAM and Digital Video built in, aimed at institutional and professional users.[8]

Retrostuff, a CD-i repair site, reports that Philips gave the later CDI 470/85 the CDI 490 system ROM, which supports 32 KB NVRAM.[11]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

The service manual's key-component descriptions and parts list give the main parts of the main panel.[1][12]

[1][12][13]

The NVRAM position is drawn on the circuit diagram as "8kx8 OR 32kx8", with resistor 3241 fitted only for 8 KB and 3242, 3244 and 3270 fitted only for 32 KB. Connector 1096 takes the FMV Digital Video expansion panel.[13] Retrostuff lists the 470 and 490 as the "Mono IV (small players)" board, with the BT9107 or BT9108 video encoder, the CDM 12.1 mechanism and the 20PS304 power supply.[9]

Ports

[edit | edit source]

The front input port is an 8-pin mini-DIN for CD-i pointing devices only: pin 1 rxd1, 2 rxd2, 3 tx, 4 rts1, 5 ground, 7 rts2 and 8 +5 V at up to 100 mA. Pointing devices run at 1200 baud. The rear input port, also 8-pin mini-DIN, is for serial CD-i devices, with rxd on pin 2, txd on 3, cts on 6, rts on 7 and +5 V on 8. The rear also has two RCA audio outputs, an RCA composite video output and, on the UK /05, an RF modulator with a channel selector for channels 30 to 39 (preset to 36).[4]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The CDI 470 has an internal switch-mode supply, 20PS304, in two parts: a small mains board with the inlet at the rear, and the main supply board with the power switch at the front.[5] The mains board carries the fuse 1101 (T 1 A L 250 V), the NTC inrush limiter 3101, the mains filter 5101 and the X capacitor 2101 (330 nF 250 V).[14][15] The main board uses a UC3842AN controller (7103), an STP3N60FI or STP6N60FI switching transistor (7102), a TL431 (7201) and CNX82A optocoupler (7106) in the feedback loop, and an MC79M05CT regulator (7202) for -5 V.[14][15]

The supply gives +5 V and -5 V on a nine-pin connector; it has no fuses on its outputs. The -5 V rail is fused on the main panel instead, by 3255, an MP100 rated 65 V 1.0 A, beside the supply connector.[5][16] The specification gives the mains input as 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, for both the European and UK versions.[4]

Documentation

[edit | edit source]

General maintenance

[edit | edit source]

The parts that need attention are the timekeeper NVRAM chip, the CDM 12.1 mechanism and its turntable, and the -5 V fuse on the main panel.[17][16] See Philips CDI 470 General Maintenance.

Troubleshooting

[edit | edit source]

Philips built the Low Level Test and the Service Shell into the system ROM, and the service manual gives supply voltages, clock frequencies and error codes.[6][18] See Philips CDI 470 Troubleshooting Guide.

Capacitor replacement

[edit | edit source]

The main panel has 30 electrolytic capacitors and the 20PS304 supply seven. See Philips CDI 470 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
