The Philips CDI 605 is a professional CD-i player that Philips Interactive Media Systems built for authoring CD-i titles. ICDIA describes it as a player with 5 MB of RAM, SCSI, Ethernet and parallel ports and extra diagnostic tools in the player shell.[5] Philips' own panel drawing also shows a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive on the front.[2] There were two versions. The original CDI 605/00 loads discs in a caddy and could not take a Digital Video cartridge, although an upgrade kit replaced one of its two extension connectors with a DVC connector. The later CDI 605T/20 has a disc tray and takes the 22ER9424 Digital Video board.[3] Philips' user manual for the 605 is dated 1992 and the manual for the 605T 1993.[2][6]

[3] The 605T also came with a newer system ROM, release 1.3, according to its owner at retrostuff.org.[4] Philips' service manual for the 605T is a supplement to the CDI 605/00/05/17 manual (service code 4822 725 24083) and covers only the parts that changed: the tray loader, the CD panel, the expansion panel and the extension board.[1]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

Philips' demounting chart and parts lists for the 605T name the main assemblies: the MMC (Multi Media Controller) panel 1001, the APU (audio processing unit) panel 1002, the video encoder panel 1003, the CD panel 1004 that carries the drive electronics and the analogue outputs, the power supply 1006, the expansion panel FMV 1007, the floppy drive unit 1008 and the emulator panel 1011. The disc mechanism is a CDM 9 in Philips' tray loader 915.[1] The block diagram names the processor as the SCC68070.[1]

The 22ER9132/40 extension board fitted at the rear adds 4 MB of RAM, a SCSI-1 port on a 50-pin micro ribbon connector, a Centronics printer port and thin-wire (BNC) IEEE 802.3 Ethernet.[1] The cinch socket marked DO on the 605 connects a CD-i emulator and does not carry an S/PDIF signal.[3] The CD drive selector on the rear switches between the internal drive and an external drive or emulator.[2]

The owner of a 605T/20 at retrostuff.org found a Mitsubishi MF355C-299MG floppy drive with its own controller board, a Japan Servo TUDC12B4-937 fan, a power supply for 100–120 V and 220–240 V, and eight Motorola MCM514256AZ10 DRAMs (1 MB) on the MMC panel.[7] The Mini MMC board in the professional players keeps its settings in an 8 KB Timekeeper NVRAM and uses a Sony CXA1145P video encoder.[8][9]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]
  • The Timekeeper NVRAM's built-in cell runs flat. Settings and the date are lost at every power-off, and the player can stop at a light blue screen or at the "memory full" error.[9][4]
  • The tray belt slackens and the grease in the tray mechanism dries out, so the tray sticks or squeals when it opens and closes (605T).[7]
  • The fan is noisy; on the 605T examined at retrostuff.org it only needed cleaning.[7]

Diagnosis is on the Philips CDI 605 Troubleshooting Guide, the strip-down on the Philips CDI 605 General Maintenance page and the capacitor values on the Philips CDI 605 Capacitor Replacement Guide.

Documentation

[edit | edit source]
  • Philips CDI 605 Documentation: the CDI 605 and CDI 605T user manuals, the CDI 605T service manual supplement, and Philips' 1992 technical documentation for CDI 605 users.[10]

ICDIA's service manual index lists the 605T supplement as a Mini-MMC manual whose diagrams are shared with the CDI 605, 603 and 610.[11]
