The Philips CDI 205 is one of Philips's first consumer Compact Disc Interactive (CD-i) players. ICDIA describes it as the European version of the Philips CDI 910, the first consumer CD-i player, and records that it was officially sold only in the United Kingdom during the European launch of the system in 1992, and never on the European mainland.[1] Inside it is built from separate panels around Philips's Mini MMC (Multi Media Controller) board, the same generation as the first version of the Philips CDI 220, the 220/00.[9][10] Philips's service manual for the 205/00 and 205/05 survives and is hosted here. It has circuit diagrams for every panel except the MMC board, which Philips replaced as a unit and shows only as a component layout.[5][11]
Versions and relatives
[edit | edit source]Philips adds a version number after the type number on the type plate: /00 for continental Europe, /05 for the UK, /11 for Japan and /17 for the United States.[12]
| Player | Market | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CDI 205/00, 205/05 | Europe, UK | Covered by service manual 4822 725 24103; RGB on the Euroconnector for PAL and SECAM[8][7] |
| CDI 205/11 | Japan | Mini MMC (NTSC) board[9] |
| CDI 205/17T | United States | Sold by Tandy as the Memorex CDI-2200[10][9] |
| Philips CDI 910 | United States | The American version of the 205, launched in October 1991[10] |
ICDIA's comparison table lists the 205/00 with the first-generation user shell, an RC5 infrared remote, 8 KB of NVRAM, the 22ER9141 Digital Video cartridge, the CDM 9 mechanism and the Mini MMC board, and gives the same entries for the 220/00.[10] retrostuff groups the 205/00 and 220/00 as the PAL Mini MMC, and the 205/11, the Memorex player and the 910/17P as a separate NTSC variant of the board.[9]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]
The service manual divides the player into numbered assemblies: the MMC panel (1001), the APU or audio processing panel (1002), the video encoder panel (1003), the CD panel (1004), the display panel (1005), the power supply panel (1006) and the headphone panel (1007).[13][3] The APU and encoder panels plug into the CD panel through two board connectors each.[13] The disc mechanism is a CDM-9 in a tray loader.[13][5]
| Function | Part | Panel |
|---|---|---|
| Main processor | SCC68070 (7201) | MMC[3] |
| System ROM | One 4 Mbit ROM (512 KB) | MMC[4] |
| NVRAM and clock | SGS-Thomson MK48T08B Timekeeper | MMC[4] |
| Slave processor, which runs port 1 | 68HC05 (7206) | MMC[2][3] |
| Audio digital output circuit (ADOC) | PCF3523 (7310) | CD[14] |
| Bitstream DAC | SAA7321 (7400) | APU[15] |
| Volume attenuators | AD7528 (7506, 7507) | APU[15] |
| Video encoder | Sony CXA1145P (7601) | Encoder[16] |
| Display driver and display | U3090MG (7151), 11MT64GK (7152) | Display[17] |
The two input ports are 8-pin mini-DIN sockets. Port 1 on the front is run by the slave processor at 1200 or 9600 baud; port 2 on the rear is the SCC68070's own UART, at 75 to 19,200 baud.[2] The rear panel also carries the aerial input and output with a channel selector on some versions, and the extension socket for the 22ER9141 Digital Video (full-motion video) module.[6]
The switch-mode power supply delivers +5.2 V, +12 V, −12 V, −8 V, +8 V and +30 V.[18] Philips states that every board can be repaired to component level except the MMC board, which is replaced as a unit, and that the CDM-9 is replaced as an assembly.[5]
Known faults
[edit | edit source]- The Timekeeper NVRAM holds its own battery. When it runs flat, settings and the clock are lost at power-off and the player can stop at a light blue screen or a "memory full" message.[19] See the maintenance guide.
- A tray that will not open may be locked by the shop demonstration mode. A Philips service note bound into the manual explains that tray-loading CD-i players enter this mode if STOP is held while the player is turned on, and the tray then stays shut; turning the player on again with STOP held switches it off.[20]
- Philips's notes for the power supply are that a blown fuse usually means a shorted switching transistor 7002, and that a supply which squeals has a short on its secondary side or has tripped its overvoltage protection.[5]
Fault finding is on the Philips CDI 205 Troubleshooting Guide, dismantling and routine work on the Philips CDI 205 General Maintenance page, and the electrolytic capacitors on the Philips CDI 205 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
