The Philips CDI 490 is a CD-i player built as a better-equipped version of the Philips CDI 470. ICDIA describes it as aimed mainly at institutional and other professional users who needed more storage: it has 32 KB of NVRAM in place of the 470's 8 KB, and Digital Video built in as standard.[7] It uses the small-player version of Philips's Mono IV main board and the same 20PS304 supply as the 470.[4][6]

History

[edit | edit source]

Wikipedia lists the 490 with the 450 and 470 as the 400 series, which it says was shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago in June 1994.[1] No Philips service manual or user manual for the CDI 490 has been found.

Specifications

[edit | edit source]

ICDIA's comparison table sets the 490 against the two 470 versions:

CDI 490 and CDI 470 compared (ICDIA)
Version Shell Remote control NVRAM Digital Video I/O CDM Board
CDI 470/00 2nd RC6 8 KB 22ER9956 cartridge (optional) B 12.1 Mono IV
CDI 470/20 2nd RC6 8 KB Installed B 12.1 Mono IV
CDI 490/00 2nd RC6 32 KB Installed B 12.1 Mono IV

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

Retrostuff, a CD-i repair site, groups the 470 and 490 as the "Mono IV (small players)" board, with a BT9107 or BT9108 video encoder, a CDM 12.1 mechanism and the 20PS304 supply.[4] The same site says the small players share the Mono IV board design of the larger CDI 660/00, 220/80 and 210/60, with some components not fitted.[5] The CDI 470 service manual draws the NVRAM position as "8kx8 OR 32kx8", with resistors 3242, 3244 and 3270 fitted only for 32 KB.[8]

NVRAM

[edit | edit source]

Where most 470s have an M48T08 timekeeper chip, the 490 has a Dallas DS1216C SmartWatch RAM socket with a 32 KB SRAM chip (for example a Mitsubishi M5M5256DP-70LL-I) plugged into it. The socket holds the clock and the batteries. Its clock is accurate to better than one minute a month at 25 °C and needs no calibration. Retrostuff warns that pulling the SRAM out of the socket deletes its contents at once, and that an 8 KB timekeeper must not be fitted in its place.[3] Care of the socket is on the maintenance page.

Digital Video

[edit | edit source]

The Digital Video Cartridge is fitted inside the player. Retrostuff's CDI 490/00 had a 22ER9956/40, the later IMPEG version, which crashes version 1 of The 7th Guest at the cake puzzle. An older VMPEG cartridge (22ER9956/20 to /39) can be fitted instead, but only after moving a plastic holder out of the way, minding the power and CD cables.[9]

System ROM

cdi490a16.rom ID 77, R1.6 E115F45B CDI 470/85; the same ROM as MAME's cdi490a.rom (CRC32 E2F200F6), which is stored big-endian
- R1.2 - Early CDI 490; has the 16:9 option in the menu

[10][11][5]

The 490 ROM detects whether 8 KB or 32 KB of NVRAM is fitted, which is why retrostuff recommends it for 470s upgraded to 32 KB.[11] It also contains the Service Shell module sv, which the CDI 660 and 670 ROMs lack; retrostuff used the 490's module to patch the Service Shell into a CDI 660.[12] The start-up message can be customised with the CDI 660/670 Key disc and PIN code 3094, which also works on the 490, but a keyboard on the 490 needs the 22ER9208 I/O port splitter.[4]

Video output

[edit | edit source]

The 490 has no RGB output as built. Retrostuff's RGB SCART modification enables RGB on the video encoder with a 1 kΩ resistor, 3161, to +5 V, populates the missing video, audio and switching parts, and cuts a hole in the case for a SCART socket. The service manual's 820 Ω value for resistors 3162, 3163, 3182, 3183, 3189 and 3190 is wrong; the boards that have RGB use 510 Ω. The SCART switching voltage on pin 8 needs a +11 V rail, which the 20PS304 does not provide.[5]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The 20PS304 is a two-part switch-mode supply: a small mains board with the inlet at the rear and a larger board with the power switch at the front. It accepts 100 to 240 V AC, gives +5 V and -5 V, and has one fuse, 1101 (T 1.0 A L 250 V). The -5 V rail is protected on the main panel by fuse 3255 at grid F1.[6][13]

Documentation

[edit | edit source]

No CDI 490 manual has been found. The CDI 470 service manual covers the main board and supply the two players share; the 490's own NVRAM and Digital Video fitting are not in it.[8]

General maintenance

[edit | edit source]

The parts that need attention are the SmartWatch NVRAM socket, the CDM 12.1 mechanism and the -5 V fuse 3255.[3][13] See Philips CDI 490 General Maintenance.

Troubleshooting

[edit | edit source]

The 490 ROM includes the Service Shell.[12] See Philips CDI 490 Troubleshooting Guide.
