The Philips CDI 602 is a professional CD-i player: ICDIA describes it as identical to the Philips CDI 601 apart from a floppy disc drive for extra storage.[5] Philips's brochure presents the 3.5-inch drive as a "personal memory device": a floppy linked to a CD-i disc could hold a trainee's progress, bookmarks and test scores, or bring in up-to-date data such as revised prices for a product catalogue on disc.[2] Like the 601, it could not be extended with a Digital Video cartridge, according to ICDIA.[5]

ICDIA's comparison table gives the 602/00 exactly the same entries as the 601/00: first-generation player shell, RC5 infra-red, 8 KB NVRAM, no Digital Video cartridge, caddy loading, 1 MB of main RAM, I/O arrangement A, CDM 9 and the Maxi-MMC board.[3] The notes of retrostuff, a CD-i repair site, record the Maxi MMC board in the 602 as confirmed in January 2022.[6]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

The front panel adds three items to the 601's: the floppy drive itself, an FDD LED and a push button to eject the disc. The rear panel is the same as the 601's: voltage selector, two extension slots, four serial ports, RGB, Y/C and composite outputs, a 525/625 line selector and a remote infra-red connector.[2][7]

Philips's 1992 technical documentation for the 6XX series describes the floppy disc interface used in the series: a DP8473 floppy disc controller with its own DMA and a 4 KB sector buffer, needing no trimming or adjustment, and supporting standard 3.5-inch drives of 1.0 MB (double density) or 2.0 MB (quad density) unformatted capacity, 80 tracks per side at 300 rpm.[8] At start-up the player checks whether a floppy drive is present and, if so, adds every floppy format it knows to its configuration file; the "load" button in the player shell's settings menu then starts an application from the floppy.[9][10]

The NVRAM is the same as the 601's: a Dallas DS1216C SmartWatch RAM socket with an 8 KB SRAM chip, an arrangement retrostuff has found only in these two players.[11] The supply is a switch-mode unit with a mains voltage selector.[12][2] Retrostuff's RGB SCART adapter for the CDI 605 also works with the 602.[13]
