Philips CDI 602 Capacitor Replacement Guide

No capacitor values have been published for the Philips CDI 602. No service manual for it has been found; ICDIA's list of service manuals has none for the 601 or 602, and retrostuff, the CD-i repair site with the most detail on Philips boards, says little is known about their Maxi MMC board.[1][2] For failure signs in general see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

What is known

[edit | edit source]
  • The 602 is the Philips CDI 601 with a 3.5-inch floppy drive added, on the same Maxi MMC board.[3][2] No capacitor list has been published for either; the Philips CDI 601 Capacitor Replacement Guide is in the same state.
  • The supply is a switch-mode unit for 100 to 120 V or 220 to 240 V ± 10 %, chosen with the 110/220 V selector. The 602 draws about 40 W without extensions, 5 W more than the 601.[4][5][6]
  • The floppy drive is a standard 3.5-inch unit, 80 tracks per side at 300 rpm; its controller, a DP8473, needs no adjustment.[7] Philips's documentation does not describe the drive's own electronics.
  • The DS1216C SmartWatch socket holding the NVRAM contains batteries, not capacitors; see the maintenance page.[8]
  • The Mini MMC players (604 and 605) use a different board, so the Philips CDI 605 Capacitor Replacement Guide does not apply.[2]

Recording your own board

Record sheet (one row per electrolytic)

Floppy drive
  1. Photograph each board from above before removing anything, with the reference numbers readable.
  2. Read the value, voltage and temperature rating from each capacitor's sleeve and measure its diameter, height and lead spacing.
  3. Note the polarity marking printed on the board at each position. On a Philips CDI 350, retrostuff fitted two electrolytics the wrong way round by following the + marks instead of the white dots.[9]
  4. In the parts lists of Philips's later CD-i service manuals (CDI 450 and 470), every electrolytic capacitor that has a service code has one beginning 4822 124, which helps when a code is printed on a part.[10][11]

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for some time; retrostuff warns that the large filter capacitors in CD-i supplies can give a shock if they have not discharged.[6]
  2. Remove any floppy from the drive, and do not disturb the SRAM in the SmartWatch socket, as lifting it deletes the stored data.[8]
  3. Replace like for like: the same capacitance, at least the same voltage, and the same polarity.
  4. Check the voltage selector before switching on.[4]
  5. After reassembly, confirm that the player reaches the player shell, reads a disc and loads from floppy; see the Philips CDI 602 Troubleshooting Guide.
