Philips CDI 605 Capacitor Replacement Guide

Philips CDI 605T CD panel component layout
CD panel parts list and component side layout of the CDI 605T (service manual p. 19)

The Philips CDI 605 has electrolytic capacitors on its CD panel, its power supply, its MMC panel and its smaller panels. Philips' service manual for the tray-loading CDI 605T gives the values for the CD panel, the control panel and the expansion panel FMV, because those boards changed for the 605T; the values below are read from its circuit diagrams.[1] The power supply, MMC, APU and video encoder panel diagrams are in the separate CDI 605/00/05/17 service manual (4822 725 24083), which is not among the manuals ICDIA hosts, so no values for those boards have been published.[1][2] The CD panel drawing covers several Mini MMC players at once; notes on it mark parts fitted only to the CDI 205, 910, 603, 610 or 220/00, and parts fitted only to caddy or only to tray loaders.[1]

Visual inspection

[edit | edit source]
  • Look for bulging tops, electrolyte on the board and corrosion around the capacitor legs and nearby vias. See Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
  • Philips' CD panel parts list identifies 2501 and 2502 as bipolar electrolytics; they must be replaced with bipolar parts.[1]
  • Check the Digital Video board while it is out. The 605T at retrostuff.org had two SMD ceramic capacitors (2307 and 2433) missing from its 22ER9424 board.[3]

CD panel (1004)

[edit | edit source]

The CD panel (board 3104 103 2836) carries the drive servo and decoder, the KILL mute circuit, the headphone amplifier and the supply branches for the analogue circuits.[1]

[1] The location grid on page 19 of the service manual gives the board square for each reference.[1]

Control panel and expansion panel FMV

[edit | edit source]
Other electrolytics in the 605T supplement
Board Ref Capacitance Voltage Where the diagram places it
Control panel 1005-D 2101 22 µF Not marked Supply of the infra-red receiver 6101
Expansion panel FMV 1007 2002 100 µF Not marked Input of the −5 V regulator 7002 (MC7905), on −12 V
Expansion panel FMV 1007 2003 100 µF Not marked Output of 7002, on −5 V

[1] Where Philips gives no voltage, read the rating from the part on your board and fit at least the same.

Boards without published values

[edit | edit source]

For the power supply (assembly 4822 214 51993), the MMC panel, the APU panel (4822 214 51849) and the encoder panel (4822 214 51992), record each electrolytic before removing it:[1]

  1. Photograph the board from both sides before any work.
  2. Note the reference, capacitance, voltage, diameter, height and lead pitch printed on each part, and which side the negative stripe faces.
  3. Replace one capacitor at a time with the same capacitance and the same or a higher voltage rating, and check the height under the tray and the extension riser.
  4. In the power supply, treat the large filter capacitor as charged until you have measured it; retrostuff.org warns that these can give an electric shock if not discharged.[4]

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Take the CD panel out by Philips' route: cover, bottom plate, support bracket, tray loader, then the CD panel's five screws, with the APU, encoder and emulator panels unplugged. The full order is on the Philips CDI 605 General Maintenance page.[1]
  2. Desolder each capacitor and clean the pads. Fit the new part with the polarity shown on the layout, and fit 2501 and 2502 as bipolar parts.
  3. Check the supply branches after reassembly: −5 V, +5VB, +5VC and ±12VA on the CD panel, as listed on the Philips CDI 605 Troubleshooting Guide.
  4. Play Testdisc 5 and repeat Philips' CD panel checks.[1]
