Philips CDI 910 Capacitor Replacement Guide

Philips CDI 910 power supply (training manual figure 22)
Philips' simplified drawing of the CDI 910 power supply (training manual figure 22)

The Philips CDI 910 has electrolytic capacitors in its power supply, on the CD unit and on the MMC, APU and video encoder boards. Philips' technical training manual for the 910 prints the values of the main power supply capacitors in a simplified drawing, without voltage ratings.[1] The full CDI 910 service manual survives only on paper at ICDIA.[2] The power supply drawing in the hosted service manual for the CDI 220/00, another Mini MMC player, carries the same component numbers and values as the 910 drawing, together with the voltage ratings; those ratings are given below as the 220/00's.[3][1]

Visual inspection

[edit | edit source]
  • Look for bulging tops, electrolyte on the board and corrosion around the legs and nearby tracks. See Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
  • The two 10 000 µF capacitors on the 5 V output and the primary reservoir capacitors are the largest parts in the supply. Treat the primary capacitors as charged until you have measured them.[3][4]

2027 Not drawn 3300 µF 10 V +5.2 V output, after choke 5008

[1][3] The 220/00 manual's checkpoint for the 30 V output is +28.5 V, while 2015 on that output is marked 25 V and the diagram's grey reading beside the output says +20.5 V. Measure the rail on your board and fit 2015 with a rating comfortably above what you measure.[3] The 220/00 parts list names the other primary parts: fuse 1001 (T2A on the diagram), the 330 nF 250 V suppression capacitor 2001, switching transistor 7002 (BUT12AF), the BT136-500 triac 7007 and the TL431CLP shunt regulator 6011.[3] Whether the American 910 has the same mains input section as the European 220/00 is not shown in the training manual, whose drawing starts at the 300 V DC rail.[1]

CD unit

[edit | edit source]

Philips drew the CD panel of several Mini MMC players on one sheet. In the copy printed in the CDI 605T service manual, the notes mark parts fitted only to the CDI 205 and 910, so that drawing covers the 910's panel.[5]

[5] The circuit position of each part is listed on the Philips CDI 605 Capacitor Replacement Guide. Check every value against your own board: the drawing also includes parts fitted only to caddy-loading players and to other models.

MMC, APU and video encoder boards

[edit | edit source]

No values for the 910's own MMC, APU or encoder boards have been published online. The hosted CDI 220/00 service manual has circuit diagrams and parts lists for that player's APU and video encoder unit and a layout of its MMC panel, which are the closest published reference.[3] Before replacing anything on these boards, photograph both sides, write down the reference, value, voltage, size and polarity of each electrolytic, and replace one part at a time with the same value and an equal or higher voltage rating.

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Remove the top and bottom covers. Release and short the CDM flex cable before lifting out the mechanism.[1]
  2. Take the power supply out and work on it on the bench. Keep a load on the 5 V output whenever it is powered for testing: Philips gives 5 Ω 10 W in the training manual and 4 Ω 25 W in the 220/00 measurement section.[1][3]
  3. After recapping, check the outputs against the checkpoints on the Philips CDI 910 General Maintenance page, and reset the +5.2 V output with R3020 if needed.[3]
