Philips CDI 910 General Maintenance

The Philips CDI 910 was launched in 1991, and Philips' technical training manual is the main published service document for it.[1][2] The full service manual, with the exploded views and the disassembly flowchart, survives only as a paper copy at ICDIA.[3] The procedures below therefore come from the training manual, with figures from the service manual of the CDI 220/00, another Mini MMC player, where they are marked as such.[4]
Safety
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the player before opening it. The switching transistor side of the power supply works from about 300 V DC rectified from the mains.[2] retrostuff.org's advice for CD-i supplies is to leave the power switch on for a while after unplugging so that the filter capacitors discharge.[5]
- Do not run the power supply with its loads unplugged unless the 5 V output carries a load resistor. Without a load the overvoltage protection trips.[2]
- The laser in the CDM-9 is easily damaged by static. Before the mechanism comes out, short the contacts of its flex cable with a conductive clip; Philips suggests a paper clip.[2]
Opening the player
[edit | edit source]The circuit boards can be reached once the top and bottom covers are off. The control panel and the headphone panel are fixed to the front assembly and come out with it.[2]
- Remove the top and bottom covers.
- Before lifting out the CDM and tray assembly, release the CDM flex cable: lift the upper part of the flex connector to free the cable, then pull the cable out carefully.
- Short the flex cable contacts with a conductive clip while the mechanism is out.
- On reassembly, check that the flex cable is fully seated and the connector locked.
[2] Philips' training manual says every board can be repaired to component level except the MMC board, which was replaced as a unit, and that the CDM-9 mechanism was replaced as an assembly.[2]
Service positions and tools
[edit | edit source]The APU panel plugs into the CD unit through two connectors on its underside. To measure it in place, Philips lifts it on two 6-pin extension cables. The video encoder panel plugs into the CD panel behind the APU and is lifted on two 10-pin extension cables in the same way.[2]
| Part number | Description |
|---|---|
| 4822 321 22267 | 10-pin extension cable for the video encoder unit (two needed) |
| 4822 321 22268 | 6-pin extension cable for the APU (two needed) |
| 4835 310 57146 | CD-i prototype disc, for testing CD-i functions |
| 4835 310 57147 | Low-level test computer cable |
| 4835 310 57148 | Service shell jumper plug |
| 4835 310 57151 | Low-level test unit |
| 4835 395 17212 | T-9 Torx driver |
[2] In the scanned copy the two extension cable numbers in appendix F are struck through and replaced by hand with 4822 310 57179 and 4822 310 57178; the printed numbers are the ones used in the body of the manual.[2]
Timekeeper NVRAM
[edit | edit source]The MMC unit keeps the player's settings and clock in an 8 KB Timekeeper chip with a built-in BR1225 cell.[6][7] When the cell is flat the settings are lost at power-off, and the player can stop at a light blue screen or a "memory full" error. Fit a 28-pin socket and a new M48T08, or a repaired original, and calibrate the clock from the low-level test afterwards.[7] The removal method for this chip on a Mini MMC board is described on the Philips CDI 605 General Maintenance page. Battery and corrosion damage are covered on Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
Disc mechanism
[edit | edit source]The CDM-9 is a swing-arm mechanism with a single-beam laser pickup, driven by the TDA8808 and TDA8809 servo ICs on the CD unit.[2] Use only a CD-DA disc when testing the drive, servo and audio circuits in the service shell.[2] A drive that will not start is diagnosed on the Philips CDI 910 Troubleshooting Guide.
Power supply checks while the player is open
[edit | edit source]Philips' service manual for the CDI 220/00, whose power supply diagram carries the same component numbers and values as the 910 training manual's simplified drawing, gives these checkpoints:[4][2]
| Supply | Nominal | Measure at |
|---|---|---|
| +5.2 V | +5.3 V DC | P0006 pin 4 |
| +12 V | +12.1 V DC | P0005 pin 1, or M7 pin 8 on the MMC panel |
| −12 V | −12.1 V DC | P0005 pin 2, or M7 pin 7 on the MMC panel |
| −8 V | −8 V DC | P0004 pin 6, or C1 pin 3 on the CD panel |
| +8 V | +8 V DC | P0004 pin 7, or C1 pin 2 on the CD panel |
| +30 V | +28.5 V DC | P0004 pin 8, or C1 pin 1 on the CD panel |
[4] All voltages are measured to earth. The +5.2 V output is set with R3020 to 5.3 V ±40 mV at test point 51.[4] Check the 910's own board before relying on these connector numbers.
