The Philips CDI 910 is the CD-i player that Philips launched in the United States in 1991. It is the American version of the CDI 205, which was sold in the United Kingdom.[4] ICDIA lists the 910 as the launch model of October 1991; Wikipedia gives the American release as December 1991.[1][5] The 910 uses Philips' Mini MMC main board and the CDM-9 swing-arm disc mechanism, and it has the first-generation player shell. It was sold with the Thumbstick remote and takes the 22ER9141 Digital Video cartridge.[2][6] Philips' American service organisation published a technical training manual for the player, which explains the circuits, the built-in service tests and the main troubleshooting routes.[2]

Relatives

[edit | edit source]
  • The CDI 205 is the same player for the United Kingdom.[4]
  • The Memorex CDI-2200, sold by Tandy, is an OEM version of the CDI 205 (CDI 205/17T).[1]
  • retrostuff.org groups the 910/17P with the Japanese 205/11 and the Memorex player as the NTSC version of the Mini MMC board, and points to the CDI 220/00 service manual and the 910 training manual as its references.[3]
  • ICDIA's manual table gives the CDI 205/00 user manual as the best match for the 910.[6]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

Philips' training manual names the main assemblies as the MMC (Multi Media Controller) unit, the power supply unit, the video encoder unit, the APU (audio processing unit), the CD unit, the CDM-9 mechanism, the loading tray assembly and the front assembly, which carries the control panel and the headphone panel. An expansion unit and the RF modulator and switch are also fitted.[2]

Main ICs named in the training manual
Function Part Board
Main processor SCC68070 MMC unit
System ROM 512 KB MMC unit
Drive processor MC68HSC05C8 CD unit
Photodiode signal processor TDA8808 CD unit
Radial error signal processor TDA8809 CD unit
Decoder SAA7310 CD unit
Audio digital output circuit PCF3523 (ADOC) CD unit
Bitstream DAC SAA7321 APU
Attenuators AD7528 APU
Video encoder CXA1145 (7601) Video encoder panel

[2] The power supply is a self-oscillating parallel switched-mode supply that delivers 5 V, 8 V, −8 V, 12 V, −12 V and 30 V, with a capacity of 13 to 55 W provided the 5 V output is loaded by at least 1.5 A.[2] Philips' training manual states that every board can be serviced to component level except the MMC board, which is replaced as a unit, and that the CDM-9 mechanism is also replaced as an assembly.[2] The settings are kept in an 8 KB Timekeeper NVRAM on the MMC board, and the video encoder is a Sony CXA1145P.[3]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

Repair reports from owners that deal with the 910 itself are scarce. The faults below are documented for the Mini MMC players in general:

  • The cell inside the Timekeeper NVRAM runs flat. Settings and the date are lost at power-off, and the player can stop at a light blue screen or a "memory full" error.[7]
  • A power supply that squeals has either a short on its secondary side or in the player, or its overvoltage protection has tripped; a blown fuse usually means a shorted switching transistor 7002.[2]

Diagnosis is on the Philips CDI 910 Troubleshooting Guide, the strip-down on the Philips CDI 910 General Maintenance page and the capacitor values on the Philips CDI 910 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
