The Philips CDI 604 is a professional CD-i player. ICDIA describes it as "in essence" a Philips CDI 602 with a CD drawer in place of the caddy slot, but built on a different board, which let it take Digital Video: a modified 22ER9141 cartridge, removed from its housing and fitted with a different ROM.[6] Where the 601 and 602 use the Maxi MMC board, the 604 uses the Mini MMC board, like the authoring Philips CDI 605.[4]

History

[edit | edit source]

Wikipedia lists the 604 in Philips's 600 series of professional players with the 601, 602, 605, 615, 660 and 670.[1] ICDIA gives it the first-generation player shell, the same as the 601 and 602.[2] No Philips brochure, user manual or service manual for the 604 is among ICDIA's scans.[7][8]

[2]

ICDIA explains that the 22ER9424 was made for the slots of the CDI 604 and 605/20: its boards are not housed in a cartridge but slide straight into the player's expansion slots. These players can also take a modified VMPEG cartridge. The 1 MB of extra memory on a Digital Video board is not counted in the 604's main RAM figure. I/O arrangement A means that the front port takes pointing devices and the rear port pointing devices or RS-232 devices.[2]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

Retrostuff, a CD-i repair site, groups the 604 with the 605 and 605T as "Mini MMC (prof.)" and gives these details for that board:[4]

  • Video encoder: Sony CXA1145P. Professional and authoring players have multi-region encoder panels, and come with multi-region switches already fitted, so no 50/60 Hz modification is needed.
  • NVRAM: 8 KB only.
  • Mechanism: CDM 9/44.
  • Service manual: retrostuff points to the CDI 220/00 service manual, the consumer player on a Mini MMC board.

Retrostuff's NVRAM article says every player of the first two generations, Mini MMC and Mono I, has a timekeeper chip, so the 604's 8 KB NVRAM is a timekeeper; the SmartWatch socket of the 601 and 602 belongs to the Maxi MMC board.[9] The professional players have a 9-pin RGB port; retrostuff's adapter for the CDI 605 also works with the 601 and 602, and it expects the 604's port to have the same pinout but advises measuring the outputs first.[5] The first-generation consumer players lack that port, but retrostuff notes that its footprint is on their CD panel and that the CD panel circuit diagrams in the CDI 220/00 service manual mark the parts it needs "CDI6XX ONLY".[5] The supply is a switch-mode unit; retrostuff says the professional players have a mains voltage selector.[10]
