Philips CDI 604 Capacitor Replacement Guide

No capacitor values have been published for the Philips CDI 604. No service manual for it has been found, and ICDIA has no brochure or manual for it among its scans.[1][2] For failure signs in general see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
What is known
[edit | edit source]- The 604 is built on the professional Mini MMC board, the same board family as the CDI 605 and 605T; the 601 and 602 use the different Maxi MMC board.[3]
- Retrostuff, a CD-i repair site, points to the CDI 220/00 service manual for the professional Mini MMC board. The 220/00 is a consumer player, and the professional board differs at least in its multi-region video encoder panel and the parts marked "CDI6XX ONLY" on the CD panel diagrams, so that manual is a guide to the layout and not a parts list for the 604.[3][4] What it lists is on the Philips CDI 220 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
- The Philips service manual for the tray-loading CDI 605T gives values for that player's CD panel, control panel and expansion panel; they are set out on the Philips CDI 605 Capacitor Replacement Guide. Whether the 604's boards match them is not known.
- The supply is a multi-voltage switch-mode unit with a voltage selector.[5]
- The 8 KB timekeeper NVRAM contains a lithium cell, not a capacitor; see the maintenance page.[6]
Recording your own board

- Photograph each board from above before removing anything, with the reference numbers readable, and note the Philips number printed on each board.
- Read the value, voltage and temperature rating from each capacitor's sleeve, and measure its diameter, height and lead spacing.
- Compare each board's reference numbers and positions with the 220/00 and 605T drawings; where a board matches, those manuals' values can be checked against what you read on the parts.
- Note the polarity marking at each position. On a Philips CDI 350, retrostuff fitted two electrolytics the wrong way round by following the + marks instead of the white dots.[7]
- In the parts lists of Philips's later CD-i service manuals (CDI 450 and 470), every electrolytic that has a service code has one beginning 4822 124.[8][9]
Procedure
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for some time; retrostuff warns that the large filter capacitors in CD-i supplies can give a shock if they have not discharged.[5]
- Replace like for like: the same capacitance, at least the same voltage, and the same polarity.
- Check the voltage selector before switching on.[5]
- After reassembly, confirm that the player reaches the player shell and plays a disc; see the Philips CDI 604 Troubleshooting Guide.
