The Philips P2000M is the monitor version of the Philips P2000 microcomputer. It uses the basic cabinet of the Philips P2000T, with keyboard, mini-cassette drive and cartridge slots, but drives a 12-inch monitor in a second cabinet that also houses up to two 5.25-inch floppy disk drives. It shows 80 characters per row where the P2000T shows 40.[3][1] Philips's Field Support manual of November 1981 already covers both versions.[5]

Basic cabinet

[edit | edit source]

The basic cabinet is the same as the P2000T's with three differences: the CPU board has no video or television interface; a video board in the lower slot of the card cage holds 4 KB of video memory and the monitor interface; and a CP/M board can be added as a memory remapping kit so that the machine runs either the original P2000 software or CP/M.[6][7]

Monitor cabinet

[edit | edit source]

The monitor cabinet is a plastic frame on a metal stand with a tilt screw at the back. The front cover carries the brightness control, the power switch and the power indicator lamp. Inside are the monitor assembly (tube and electronics), a mains transformer, a power supply board on a heat sink, and one or two disk drives on a metal plate.[13] The monitor is a FIMI 12-inch, 90-degree unit with a P31 phosphor and an antiglare finish, fed with a composite video (FBAS) signal.[1]

The Field Service Manual shows Shugart SA 400 and SA 400L drives and gives their strap settings.[14]

Power

[edit | edit source]

Each cabinet has its own mains supply. The basic cabinet supply is the P2000T's, with three 7805 regulators and a 7812; on the M-version the second 7805 feeds the video board.[15][16] The monitor cabinet supply has a 7805 for the floppy drives' +5 V, a 723 regulator with a BD645 transistor for the drives' +12 V (adjustable with R4), and a 7812 for the monitor.[15][17]

Power requirements (Field Service Manual, p. 1-14)
Cabinet Mains Consumption Fuses
Basic 220 V ±10 % (factory wired) or 110 V ±10 % 52 VA nominal 5 A (+5 V); 2 × 1 A fast (+12 V and -V)
Monitor 220 V ±10 % (factory wired) or 240 V ±10 % 58 VA nominal, 80 VA peak, with two drives 1.25 A (monitor assembly); 2 A (T); 4 A (T)

Maintenance and repair

[edit | edit source]

The Field Service Manual has a separate fault isolation procedure for the M-version, replacement procedures for the monitor assembly, floppy drives and monitor cabinet power supply, and the monitor adjustments.[18]

Documentation
