Philips P2000 Documentation
Three Philips service documents for the Philips P2000T and Philips P2000M are hosted on the wiki: the Field Service Manual of October 1982, the Field Support manual of November 1981, and the Dutch notes to a 1984 service lecture on the P2000T. The Philips P2000C is a different machine with its own manual, described on Philips P2000C Documentation.
Field Service Manual P2000
[edit | edit source]The Field Service Manual P2000 is a Philips Data Systems publication from the Service Documentation and Training Department in Apeldoorn, publication number 5122 991 30703, dated October 1982; its pages carry the codes 8208 and 8210.[1] It works to the level of replaceable modules: it tells an engineer which board, unit or fuse to change, not which component on a board has failed.[2] The scan in the p2000t documentation repository has 29 PDF pages, most of them two manual pages side by side; the hosted copy has been turned upright.[3]
| PDF pages | Manual pages | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 11 | 1-5 to 1-18 | System description of the T and M versions; block diagrams; physical description of the basic and monitor cabinets; technical data, power requirements and fuses, dimensions, interfaces; keyboard layout and screen character set |
| 12 | 1-19 | Tools, preventive maintenance (cleaning), safety procedures |
| 13 to 17 | 1-20 to 1-29 | Figures 1.8 (basic cabinet) and 1.9 (monitor cabinet); troubleshooting procedures for the T-version (1.2.4.1) and the M-version (1.2.4.2); the maintenance program (1.2.4.3) |
| 18 to 22 | 1-30 to 1-39 | Replacement of the extension board, video board, CPU board, cassette drive, keyboard, monitor assembly, floppy drives, monitor cabinet power supply and CP/M board |
| 23 to 24 | 1-40 to 1-43 | Strap settings; picture adjustments for the T-version modulator and the M-version monitor |
| 25 | 1-44, 1-45 | Installing the CP/M board |
| 26 to 29 | Chapter 4 | Spare parts |
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No circuit diagrams and no component-level parts lists; boards and units are spares in their own right.[2]
- No voltage readings beyond the check of the 5 V and 12 V supplies at the board sockets.[4]
Field Support manual (Documentatie P 2000)
[edit | edit source]The Documentatie P 2000 is the P2000 Field Support manual, with "P2000 F. SUPP." and the date code 8111 (November 1981) in every footer. It covers both the T and M versions and is written for support staff: it says that field service information is in the separate Field Service Manual.[5] The archive.org scan has 138 page images, including covers; the hosted copy reduces them to 1500 pixels.[6]
| Chapter | Pages | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 General description | 1-1 to 1-3 | The T and M versions |
| 2 Functional description | 2-1 to 2-5 | CPU, memories, I/O control, video generation; block diagram |
| 3 Detailed description | 3-1 to 3-35 | CPU board, video board (M), extension board, power supplies (3.4), ROM and I/O cartridge boards, signal names, interconnections |
| 4 Diagrams | 4-1 to 4-41 | Circuit diagrams and component layouts of every board, including the basic cabinet power supply (figures 4.13 and 4.14) and the monitor cabinet power supply (figures 4.15 and 4.16) |
| 5 Listings | Not applicable | |
| 6 Parts | 6-1 to 6-54 | Exploded views and parts lists with Philips 12NC numbers, board by board, and a list of identification codes against service codes |
| 7 Troubleshooting and repair | 7-1 to 7-9 | The maintenance program: memory, printer, keyboard, screen, tape drive, beeper and disk drive tests |
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- The basic cabinet power supply: three 7805 regulators, one each for the CPU, video and extension boards, a 7812 for +12 V, and a protection circuit that shorts the +12 V line while +5 V is missing; the -20 V unregulated supply is regulated to -5 V and -12 V on each board.[8][9]
- The electrolytic capacitors of both power supplies and of each board, with values and voltage ratings in the parts lists (chapter 6), though without quantities or circuit designators for the boards.[10][11]
- A conflict between the basic cabinet schematic, which marks C1 and C2 as 4700 µF, and its parts list, which names a 6800 µF 16 V capacitor and no 4700 µF part.[9][10]
Notes to the service lecture (1984)
[edit | edit source]Notities bij de servicelezing: De Philips P2000T thuiscomputer, hardware aspecten en reparatiemogelijkheden is a 17-page set of notes in Dutch from Philips Nederland's Technical Service in Eindhoven, dated February 1984.[12] It explains the Z80 (clocked at 2.5 MHz in the P2000T), the memory map and I/O port assignments, the teletext character set, and fault finding with the test module in the first cartridge slot: the RAM test on the eight 4116 memory chips, the V24 socket, keyboard, video (SAA5020 and SAA5050) and tape drive tests.[13] The hosted copy is reduced to 150 dpi.[12]
