The Philips P2000T is a Z80-based home computer that Philips introduced in 1980. It connects to a black-and-white or colour television, displays text and block graphics with a teletext character generator, stores programs on a built-in mini-cassette drive and runs software from plug-in ROM cartridges.[1][5] The Philips P2000M uses the same basic cabinet with a video board and a separate monitor cabinet; the portable Philips P2000C is a different design.[5]
History
[edit | edit source]Wikipedia dates the P2000T to March 1980 and names Philips's Austrian company as the manufacturer. It reuses the ROM cartridge idea of Philips's Videopac G7000 console, and one of the cartridges holds Microsoft BASIC. The machine was popular mainly in the Netherlands, in science, education and videotex, and Philips later replaced it with its MSX computers. Wikipedia gives its price as 3000 guilders in 1981, lowered to 1200 guilders in 1984.[1]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]Basic cabinet
[edit | edit source]Inside the basic cabinet are the power supply unit, the CPU board, the keyboard, the mini-cassette drive and room for an optional extension board.[6] The CPU board carries the Z80, the 4 KB monitor ROM, the 2 KB video memory, 16 KB of system memory and the interfaces for the keyboard, cassette, cartridges, printer and television.[6] The system memory is eight 4116 dynamic RAM chips of 16K by 1 bit.[3] The optional extension board holds a floppy disk interface and up to 32 KB more memory.[6]
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| CPU board | "Economy" CPU board, PCB 5103 108 01210, with 20 MHz and 6 MHz crystals and LM79L12 and LM79L05 negative regulators |
| Character generator | SAA5050, with the SAA5020 timing chain |
| Tape drive | MDCR 220 mini-cassette tape deck, 3933 536 08230 |
| Keyboard | 48 typewriter keys, 15 function keys, 11 control and numeric keys; English, German, Dutch or Swedish versions |
| Power supply | PCB PSU 5103 108 00470, on the aluminium backplate that serves as its heat sink |
Cartridges and interfaces
[edit | edit source]The cover has a hatch over the cartridge slots. The first slot takes a program cartridge of up to 16 KB, such as BASIC; the second takes an I/O cartridge such as the serial interface or the IEC-bus interface.[5][2][10] The printer interface is a V24 (RS-232C) port on a 25-pin connector, at 1200 baud as standard.[2][11]
Television output
[edit | edit source]The modulator gives a VHF or UHF signal on a coaxial socket, and there is also an RGB output on a six-pin connector (green, sync, ground, red, blue, beep).[11] The screen shows 24 lines of 40 characters in the teletext character set. The 2 KB video memory holds 1920 characters, enough for rows of 80, and each row can be scrolled sideways by 40 characters.[2][12]
Power
[edit | edit source]The supply is inside the basic cabinet: a mains transformer, rectifiers and three 7805 regulators and a 7812 on the power supply board. On the T-version regulators 1 and 2 are connected together to give more +5 V current.[13][14] Philips specifies 220 V ±10 % (as wired at the factory) or 110 V ±10 %, 52 VA, with a 5 A fuse for +5 V and two 1 A fast fuses for +12 V and the negative supply.[4]
Maintenance and repair
[edit | edit source]Philips serviced the P2000T by exchanging modules, and its Field Service Manual gives a step-by-step fault isolation procedure for the T-version and a maintenance program on cartridge.[15] The Field Support manual adds the circuit diagrams, component layouts and parts lists for each board.[16]
- Philips P2000T General Maintenance: opening the cabinet, cleaning, fuses and the modulator adjustments.
- Philips P2000T Troubleshooting Guide: Philips's fault isolation steps, supply checks and the maintenance program.
- Philips P2000T Capacitor Replacement Guide: the power supply and board electrolytics from the parts lists.
Documentation
[edit | edit source]The Field Service Manual (1982), the Field Support manual (1981) and the 1984 service lecture notes are hosted and described on Philips P2000 Documentation.
