Philips CDI 220 Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Philips CDI 220-77 Mono III mainboard
Mono III mainboard from a CDI 220/77, with its radial electrolytic capacitors (photograph: Evan-Amos)

The Philips CDI 220 was built on five different mainboards, so the capacitor list depends on the version number on the type plate. For the four single-board versions (Mono I to Mono IV) Philips's service manuals list every electrolytic capacitor on the mainboard and on the power supply panel, with value, voltage rating and Philips code number. For the first version, the 220/00 with the Mini-MMC board, the manual lists only a few capacitors. The tables below are taken from those parts lists. For failure signs in general see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Identify your version

[edit | edit source]

Read the version number after the slash on the type plate at the back or bottom of the player; the front only shows the type number.[1] Then use the section for that mainboard.

Version to mainboard

Safety

[edit | edit source]

The power supply panel carries mains voltage. On the Mono III and Mono IV switch-mode supplies the primary reservoir capacitor, 2103, is a 100 µF 400 V part and holds a charge after the plug is pulled.[5][6] retrostuff's advice for all CD-i supplies is to unplug the player and leave the power switch on for a while before working on the supply, to discharge the large filter capacitors properly, and not to run a switch-mode supply without a load.[3] Philips marks safety-critical parts with a warning triangle and asks for original parts in those positions.[7]

Philips printed no code number for 2808 (4700 µF 6.3 V) and 2809 (1000 µF 6.3 V); the values and ratings are as listed.[8] The same panel also carries the fuses 1805 (T2A) and 1806 (T1A) and the 47 kΩ trimmer 3807 that sets the +5 V rail.[8][9]

Power supply 20PS306

[edit | edit source]

The 20PS306 list in the 220/80 manual has the same positions, values and code numbers as the 20PS302 list above, so the 20PS302 table applies.[6] retrostuff found that the four rail protection devices differ in practice (TE5 fuses on the 20PS302, axial pico fuses marked "4000" on the 20PS306) although both manuals give the same part, 4822 252 51179.[3]

220/00 (Mini-MMC)

[edit | edit source]

The 220/00 manual does not give a capacitor list for this version. The MMC panel has no parts list at all, because Philips repaired that panel centrally.[19] The parts lists for the other panels name only selected parts: the power supply list contains no individual electrolytic capacitors, and the APU (audio) panel list names two, 2529 and 2530, both bipolar 22 µF 10 V (4822 124 41738).[4][20]

To recap a 220/00, record each capacitor from the board itself before removing it: position number from the silkscreen, capacitance, voltage, diameter, height and lead pitch, and which way the negative stripe faces. Photograph each area first. Keep the voltage rating at least as high as the original and the case small enough to fit under the DVC cage and shields.

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the player, take out any disc and any Digital Video cartridge, and leave it unplugged with the power switch on for some time before opening it.[3]
  2. Open the case and remove the boards as described in the general maintenance guide.
  3. Work on one board at a time. Check each part against the table for your version before you remove it.
  4. Desolder with fresh solder and flux. Clean old electrolyte from the board with isopropyl alcohol and look for corroded tracks and vias before fitting new parts.
  5. Fit replacements of the same capacitance and at least the same voltage rating, observing polarity. 2340 and 2360 on Mono III, and the other positions with code 4822 124 22339, are bipolar and must be replaced with bipolar parts.[15]
  6. Before refitting everything, run the supply checks below.

Checks after recapping

[edit | edit source]
  • Mono I: Philips gives the supply voltages at mainboard connector 1001 as +5 V ±5 % on pins 1, 2 and 3, −5 V ±5 % on pin 4, +25 V ±5 % on pin 5, with pins 6, 7 and 8 at ground.[21] The +5 V rail is set with trimmer 3807; the manual's instruction is to adjust it "up to 5,3 V".[22]
  • Mono III: Philips lists +5 V ±10 % at the supply pins of the main ICs, for example pins 1 and 43 of the 68070 (7210) and pin 28 of the NVRAM (7241), and +5 V ±5 % at the DSIC2 (7401) and CD60 (7510).[23]
  • Then start the service shell and run the CD drive test, as described in Philips CDI 220 Troubleshooting Guide.
