Philips CDI 490 Capacitor Replacement Guide

No parts list for the Philips CDI 490 has been found. Retrostuff lists the 490 with the Philips CDI 470 as using the same small-player Mono IV main board and the same 20PS304 supply, so the electrolytic capacitors below come from the CDI 470 service manual.[1][2] The 490 differs in its NVRAM and its built-in Digital Video Cartridge, and its board may have parts fitted that the 470 manual leaves out, so check the board against the list before ordering.[3][4] For failure signs in general see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Safety
[edit | edit source]The 100 µF 400 V primary reservoir 2103 in the 20PS304 sits inside the outlined area marked "LIVE PART".[5] Retrostuff warns that the large filter capacitors such as 2103 can give a shock if they have not been discharged properly.[2] Unplug the player and measure 2103 before working on the supply.
Power supply 20PS304
[edit | edit source]| Ref | Value | Rating | Philips code |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2103 | 100 µF | 400 V | 4822 124 42191 |
| 2112 | 47 µF | 25 V | 4822 124 40433 |
| 2201 | 4700 µF | 16 V in the parts list, 25 V on the circuit diagram | 4822 124 23183 |
| 2203 | 3300 µF | 10 V | - |
| 2204 | 100 µF | 35 V | - |
| 2205 | 1000 µF | 10 V | - |
| 2206 | 100 µF | 35 V | - |
A 25 V part for 2201 meets both figures. Positions on the board, and which part does what, are on the CDI 470 capacitor guide.
Main panel
[edit | edit source]The CDI 470 manual gives 30 electrolytic capacitors on the main panel, 25 from its parts list and five, 2149, 2151, 2208, 2255 and 2256, from the circuit diagrams because the parts-list page covering them is missing from the scan.[7][4] Grouped by value for ordering:
| Value | Rating | Qty | References |
|---|---|---|---|
| 47 µF | 25 V | 15 | 2149, 2208, 2255, 2256, 2257, 2350, 2351, 2467, 2468, 2474, 2553, 2554, 2555, 2557, 2559 |
| 47 µF | 6.3 V in the parts list, 25 V on the circuit diagram | 2 | 2273, 2281 |
| 100 µF | 25 V | 3 | 2352, 2353, 2360 |
| 100 µF | 16 V | 2 | 2323, 2324 |
| 100 µF | 10 V | 1 | 2151 |
| 220 µF | 25 V | 1 | 2341 |
| 470 µF | 16 V | 2 | 2270, 2271 |
| 1000 µF | 6.3 V | 2 | 2340, 2355 |
| 1 µF | 50 V | 1 | 2356 |
| 22 µF | 50 V | 1 | 2473 |
Grid positions on the tracks side for each reference are tabled on the CDI 470 capacitor guide. Measure the case sizes on the board; the manual does not give them.[7]
Not covered by the 470 manual
[edit | edit source]- The Digital Video Cartridge. ICDIA's list of service manuals has one for the earlier 22ER9141 cartridge but not for the 22ER9956 fitted in the 490, and no capacitor list for it has been found.[8][9]
- The DS1216C SmartWatch socket contains batteries, not capacitors; its replacement is on the maintenance page.[10]
Procedure
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the player and let the supply discharge; measure 2103.
- Open the case and take out the board you are working on, following the CDI 470 order on the CDI 470 maintenance page. Do not disturb the SRAM in the SmartWatch socket.[11][10]
- Photograph the cables and the polarity of every capacitor before removing it. On a Philips CDI 350, retrostuff fitted two electrolytics the wrong way round by following the + marks on the board instead of the white dots.[12]
- Fit parts of the same capacitance and at least the voltage listed; where the manual gives two ratings, use the higher.
- Reassemble, then check +5 V and -5 V and run the Service Shell CD drive test; see the Philips CDI 490 Troubleshooting Guide.
