Philips CDI 205 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

The Philips CDI 205 documentation hosted here consists of the service manual that Philips Interactive Media Systems, Service & Support, published for the Philips CDI 205 CD-i player and the circuit description that accompanies it. ICDIA distributes both, with a German service note, as a single 97-page PDF; here the service manual and the circuit description are hosted as separate files.[1]

The manual covers the 205/00 and 205/05 and has seven chapters: manual information, product information, service information, mechanical drawings and parts lists, descriptions (the service software), electrical drawings and parts lists, and diagnostics, measurements and adjustments.[2] Its main sections are:

Where to find things (PDF page numbers)
Pages Contents
2–3 Technical specification: video and audio outputs, the laser, ports 1 and 2, dimensions, weight and power
5–6 Front panel controls, rear connections and the Thumbstick remote control
7–14 Safety, handling of SMDs and static-sensitive parts, service tools including the service PCB
15 Dismantling the cabinet, panels and CD loader
20–25 The low-level MMC test with its error codes, and the service shell
26–30 Wiring diagram, block diagram and signal list

67–68 Service note from Philips Consumer Service GmbH, Cologne, in German, on the shop demonstration mode of tray-loading CD-i players

[2] Several diagram and parts-list pages appear twice in the scan.

The manual does not contain a circuit diagram or parts list for the MMC board, which Philips replaced as a unit, and it does not cover the 22ER9141 Digital Video cartridge.[4]

Circuit description

[edit | edit source]

The circuit description has three parts: an introduction to compact disc interactive (CD-DA, CD-ROM and CD-i discs and the user shells), the theory of operation (audio and video formats, text coding, video effects, the decoding process, the processor and the operating system), and an explanation of the CDI 205 itself, concentrating on the CD part: the loader, the drive processor, its X-bus and SPI communication with the slave processor, and the servo software, including the start-up, search and stop procedures.[3]
