Philips CDI 205 Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection

The Philips CDI 205 has electrolytic capacitors on its power supply panel, CD panel, APU (audio) panel, video encoder panel and display panel. Philips's service manual for the 205/00 and 205/05 has circuit diagrams for all of these, and the values below were read from those diagrams. The manual has no circuit diagram or parts list for the MMC board, which Philips replaced as a unit.[1][2] Position numbers repeat from panel to panel, so always note which panel a part is on: 2681, for example, is a 2200 µF capacitor on the CD panel but a 22 pF trimmer on the encoder panel.[3][4]

Safety

[edit | edit source]

Unplug the player and leave the power switch on for a while before working on the supply, so that the large filter capacitors discharge, and measure the two 200 V reservoir capacitors before touching them.[5] Philips asks for repairs to be made with the set on an isolating transformer, with no modules changed while it is switched on, and for parts marked with a warning triangle to be replaced only with identical types.[6]

[7] 2015 is marked 25 V on a rail that Philips's checkpoint table gives as +28.5 V, while the diagram's own reading beside that output is +20.5 V.[7][8] Measure the rail on your player and fit a part rated comfortably above the reading; 35 V or more covers the checkpoint figure. The parts list for this panel names no electrolytics individually; the only capacitors it lists are 2001, a 330 nF 250 V polyester part, and 2032, a 470 pF ceramic.[7]

CD panel (1004)

[edit | edit source]

The CD panel diagrams are shared with other Mini MMC players, and notes on them mark the parts fitted only to the CDI 205, to the 6xx players or to players with full-motion video. The turntable motor section is marked as not used on the CDI 205.[3][9]

APU panel (1002)

[edit | edit source]
APU electrolytics (section 6.5.1)
Ref Value Position
2407 47 µF 25 V Digital supply of the DAC 7400 (SAA7321), after 5402
2410, 2413, 2414 47 µF 25 V Analogue supplies of 7400, after 3406, 3407 and 3408

2529, 2530 22 µF (16 V on the diagram) Right and left output coupling, after 7504

[11] The APU parts list gives 2529 and 2530 as bipolar 22 µF 10 V parts, code 4822 124 41738, so the diagram and the list disagree on the voltage. Fit bipolar 22 µF parts rated at 16 V or more.[12] The other coupling capacitors in the audio path (2501, 2502, 2519, 2520, 2550 and 2551) carry no polarity note in the parts lists; check the markings on the parts you remove and fit bipolar replacements where the originals are bipolar.[12]

[edit | edit source]

The display panel has one electrolytic, 2106, 22 µF 40 V, on the +33 VA supply to the display driver after resistor 3109. The headphone panel has none.[13]

MMC board

[edit | edit source]

No values are published for the Mini MMC board itself. Before replacing anything there, photograph both sides and record the position number, value, voltage, size and polarity of each electrolytic from the board, then replace one part at a time. The same applies to the 220/00, the other player built on this board.[2][14]

Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the player, remove any disc, and open it as described on the maintenance page. The power supply, APU and encoder panels can each be lifted out on their own.[15]
  2. Work on one panel at a time and check each part against the tables before removing it.
  3. Fit replacements of the same capacitance and at least the same voltage rating, observing polarity.
  4. Test the power supply on the bench before refitting it, with a load on the +5.2 V output (Philips gives 4 Ω 25 W), and never run it unloaded.[8]
  5. Check the outputs against the checkpoint table and set +5.2 V with R3020 to 5.3 V ±40 mV at test point 51.[8]
  6. After reassembly, run the service shell's video, CD and audio tests.[16]
