Philips CDI 601 General Maintenance

No service manual for the Philips CDI 601 has been found, and retrostuff, the CD-i repair site with the most detail on Philips boards, says little is known about its Maxi MMC board.[1][2] What can be maintained from the published sources is the mains setting, the SmartWatch NVRAM socket, the caddy-loading CDM 9 mechanism and the connections. Fault-finding is on the Philips CDI 601 Troubleshooting Guide.

Mains voltage selector

[edit | edit source]

The 601 runs on 100 to 120 V or 220 to 240 V ± 10 %, set by the 110/220 V selector on the rear panel (item 11 in the brochure drawing).[3] Retrostuff notes that the Maxi MMC and Mini MMC supplies are multi-voltage switch-mode units and that only the professional and authoring players have a selector.[4] Check the selector before connecting a player of unknown history to the mains.

Retrostuff's advice for CD-i supplies is to unplug the mains lead and leave the power switch on for some time before inspecting a supply, because the large filter capacitors can give a shock if they have not discharged; to stay away from the live area when measuring with the supply on; and not to run a supply without a load.[4]

SmartWatch NVRAM

[edit | edit source]

The 601 keeps its settings and saved data in a Dallas DS1216C SmartWatch RAM socket with an 8 KB SRAM chip plugged into it, for example a Philips FCB61C65LL-70P. Retrostuff says this arrangement is found only in the 601 and 602.[5] The clock and its batteries are in the socket. Every DS1216C socket retrostuff has seen had two batteries, most still working, but it expects them to fail in time.[5]

  • Do not pull the SRAM chip out of the socket: retrostuff warns that this deletes its contents at once.[5]
  • Maxim's recommended replacement for the socket in the 8 KB arrangement is the DS1243Y-120+ 64k NV SRAM with Phantom Clock, which is no longer made.[5]
  • Retrostuff's readers have fitted an additional battery to DS1216C sockets without removing the old ones, following tutorials written for the similar DS1216E; follow the warnings in those tutorials.[5]
  • Buy replacement parts from the manufacturer or an official distributor; retrostuff warns that "new" SmartWatch sockets on eBay or AliExpress are old or fake. Removing the old one needs fresh solder, plenty of flux, a desoldering gun and wick, as some pins are soldered on both sides; fit a standard 28-pin IC socket in its place.[5]

Disc mechanism

[edit | edit source]

The 601 loads discs in a caddy through the slot on the left of the front panel, and uses the CDM 9 mechanism.[3][6][7] ICDIA describes the CDM 9 as generally considered very reliable, able to read good-quality CD-RW discs although it is not a MultiRead drive.[6] The World of CD-i, a CD-i community site, found that discs that will not spin are most often caused by a turntable that has slipped down its shaft, and that every mechanism it replaced had a damaged flat cable; it never found a dead motor.[7]

Connections

The 525/625 line selector (item 22) sits between the Y/C connector and the right audio output.[3]

Preventive maintenance checklist

[edit | edit source]
  1. Check the voltage selector before powering the player.[3]
  2. Check the date and time after the player has been off for a while; a lost clock points to the SmartWatch batteries.[5]
  3. Play a disc and watch the Reading Disc LED: it lights when a CD-i disc is loaded and flashes while the disc is being read.[3]
