Philips Videopac G7200 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The Philips Videopac G7200 has two boards with electrolytic capacitors: the game board and the monitor and power supply board.[1] No capacitor list for either board has been published. One owner on the Videopac / Odyssey2 forum has a G7200 service manual with a complete component list, including every capacitor's value and part number, and offers copies privately; a copy that another owner downloaded had no power supply or monitor sections.[2][3] For failure signs in general see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Warning: the monitor and power supply board runs from the mains and generates the tube's high voltage. Unplug the set, discharge the tube as described in CRT Discharge Procedure, and treat the supply's primary side as live until its reservoir capacitor has been measured at zero.
What owners have reported
[edit | edit source]| Ref | Where | What was reported |
|---|---|---|
| C49, C50, C51, C52 | Vertical deflection stage round the TEA1011 (IC1), monitor board | Replace these if the picture has collapsed to a thin band and the TEA1011's supplies (24 V at pin 2, 11 V at pin 12) and the height control R25 are correct[4] |
| Not identified | Monitor and power supply board | A repairer working on a Radiola Jet 27 found bad capacitors as well as cracked solder joints[5] |
The values and voltage ratings of C49 to C52 are not given in the forum thread. Read them from the parts on your board before you order replacements.
The power supply is a switch-mode design with a TEA1039 controller and a BUX84 switching transistor.[1] Owners compare the G7200's monitor and supply with the Minitel 1 terminal's, and one replaced half of a G7200 supply with half of a Minitel supply.[6][7] Compare the two boards part for part before taking any value from a Minitel.
Recording your own board
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the set and discharge the tube.
- Photograph both boards from above and below before removing anything, and photograph the plug that joins them.[1]
- Make a table of every electrolytic: designator, capacitance, voltage rating, temperature rating, diameter and lead spacing, and polarity mark on the board.
- Mark which capacitors sit in the supply's primary side, its secondary outputs, the deflection stages and the game board.
- Replace like with like: the same capacitance, at least the same voltage rating and at least the same temperature rating. Capacitors in the switch-mode supply and the deflection stages carry ripple current; use types made for that duty.
- After recapping, check the picture size, focus and stability on the screen, and the 5 V and 12 V on the game board.[8]
Game board
[edit | edit source]The game board takes 5 V and 12 V from the monitor and supply board.[8] No list of its electrolytics is available either; record them in the same way. The G7000's documented boards, listed on Philips Videopac G7000 Capacitor Replacement Guide, use the same game chips but a different layout and a different clock circuit, so their designators do not carry over.[9]
