SGI Fuel Capacitor Replacement Guide

The capacitors most likely to need replacing in a Silicon Graphics Fuel are in its power supply. SGI's Hardware User's Guide does not list the supply among the parts an owner may service, and SGI published no component values for it or for the system board.[1] The one published capacitor list for a Fuel supply is megaimg's order for his recap of a Sparkle FSP460-60PFN in 2021, given below. It is one owner's list for one of the four supply models, not an SGI parts list.[2]

Warning: the supply rectifies the mains and its primary filter capacitors hold a dangerous charge after the plug is pulled. Discharge them and check with a meter before touching the primary side. See also Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Signs of failure

[edit | edit source]
  • The L1 reports the 12 V rail below its limit and shuts the system down. megaimg saw the rail fall to 10.2 V, mostly after the system had been off for a long time, and it would run after a few attempts.[2]
  • Bulging capacitors: about half of those in megaimg's Sparkle unit, which used TEPO capacitors, had bulged, and some measured low on a tester.[2]
  • weblacky warns that capacitors in supplies of this age often fail without any visible sign.[2]
  • Owners connect supplies drifting out of regulation with failures of the DS1780 environmental monitoring chips on the system board, processor module and graphics board, which are much harder to repair than the supply.[3]

Which supply is fitted

[edit | edit source]

Four supplies are known in Fuels. The SGI part number is on the supply's label:[2]

Fuel power supplies
SGI part number Model Maker Rating Capacitor list
060-0140-004 GM430WTXW01SSV NMB 430 W None published
060-0140-005 GM430WTXW01SSV NMB 430 W None published
060-0140-007 HP-W460GC33 Hipro 460 W None published
060-0202-001 FSP460-60PFN Sparkle 460 W megaimg's order, below

jwhat opened an NMB unit (060-0140-004 rev B) and found its circuitry on two stacked boards, with a two-wire fan; he photographed both boards but listed no capacitor values.[2] The SGI version of the Sparkle supply differs from the retail one by a small extra board that produces the fan signal for the L1, and a three-wire Nidec fan.[2]

megaimg replaced every capacitor in his supply. These are the parts he ordered, with the values decoded from the Nichicon and Kemet part numbers. Check each against the capacitor it replaces before ordering.[2]

The list has 35 parts, with positions not given. After the recap megaimg reported all rails correct and the system back in service.[2]

Other supplies

[edit | edit source]

No capacitor values have been published for the NMB or Hipro supplies. Before removing anything from one of these, record each capacitor's capacitance, voltage, temperature rating, diameter, height and lead pitch, and photograph both sides of the boards so that polarity can be checked on reassembly. weblacky's advice for the large snap-in filter capacitors is to measure them with calipers and match the size, and to take photographs before starting.[2]

System board and other boards

[edit | edit source]

SGI published no capacitor values for the IP34 system board, the PIMM or the VPro graphics board.[1] Rules666's photograph shows radial electrolytic capacitors along the top edge of the system board and beside the DIMM sockets.[4] No owner's report on the IRIXNet threads used for these pages describes a failed capacitor on these boards.

Replacement procedure

[edit | edit source]

SGI provides no procedure for opening the supply.[1]

  1. Remove the supply from the Fuel and unplug it. Let the primary capacitors discharge, then confirm with a meter.
  2. Photograph both sides of each board and record every capacitor's value, voltage, size and polarity.
  3. Desolder the capacitors. weblacky warns that large snap-in filter capacitors need a powerful iron or soldering gun and should be rocked out slowly so the through-hole plating is not pulled from the board.[2]
  4. Fit 105 °C low-ESR capacitors of the same capacitance and at least the same voltage, observing polarity.
  5. Reassemble, then check the outputs with the L1 env command before relying on the system. If the supply has been replaced by an ATX adapter arrangement instead, the adapter's instructions as weblacky relays them are to connect the 3.3 V and 5 V leads first and check them with the L1 before connecting the 12 V processor lead.[5]

Owners who would rather not rebuild the original fit a standard ATX supply through an adapter board; see SGI Fuel General Maintenance#Power supply.[2]
